Democrats Call Republicans’ Bluff On Debt Ceiling As Dangerous Standoff Looms

It’s that time of year again — when raising the debt ceiling, a critical legislative act that staves off full-scale economic catastrophe, becomes a high-stakes game of political chicken.

“If they don’t need or want our input, they won’t get our help,” McConnell said Thursday from the Senate floor. “They won’t get our help with the debt limit increase that these reckless plans will require.”

But when the spending plan benefits the GQP’s constituencies, look for the GQP to take credit for it all, despite their obstruction - kinda like the COVID relief bill.

C’mon, Dems - don’t play this game - push forward and make the GQP eat it.

“I think the majority has to solve this,” Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) added. “They control the House and the Senate and the White House and it’s easy for them to deal with if they want to.”

Another Republican advocating to get rid of the filibuster.

they can avoid entirely, they can avoid all that entirely by taking action during reconciliation,” Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) told reporters Wednesday.

Yup, just make tax increases part of the reconciliation package and the deficit disappears. The antithesis of how Mitch & Co. created the Trump deficits.

…but terrorists might not have a problem causing the death of the US economy

On of these years the bomb is not going to defused in time. Nice world economy we had there.

Keeping the country afloat after an attempted coup and four years of looting without any help from the looters is quite a feat for Joe and Nancy and Chuck, but they’re on the verge of pulling off some big stuff. Mitch has been watching his team of idiots and losers flail around but you know he hasn’t thrown his last bag of flaming shit yet. We’ll see if he’s a dumb as his counterparts in the House and if he tries to burn everything out of spite.

That neatly describes 99% of GQP initiatives, doesn’t it?

Perhaps but I doubt it, They would really pay for it in 2022, It’s an empty threat.

Easy enough, actually. Assuming that we can get the 50 Dems to agree (a large assumption, I admit), if the Repubs won’t raise the debt ceiling as part of the Reconciliation pkg, the Dems can add the tax enforcement and additional taxes on the wealthiest as part of the pkg, that will cover the cost of the package. The Repubs had to cave on their last debt ceiling fiasco in 2013, and this will have the same result as soon as the Social Security checks stop coming.

“That would be the epitome of stupidity,” Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) told reporters Wednesday. “To create a fake crisis at this moment with this much going on in the world and this much going on in this country, coming out of COVID and dealing with the variant, would be the epitome of irresponsibility.”

Shoot, that means QOP’ll do it for sure.

Republicans on the debt ceiling:

Yesterday: “I just bought a $2300 bottle of scotch. Woo-hoo!”

Today: “My wife really needs to be more careful with the grocery budget.”

Sen McConnell does not know the meaning of help.

Thanks Mark, you nailed Republicans with this description.

Thanks, guys. Create fake leverage and fake risk to raise the fake fear level in your moronic base, who are too dumb to know it’s fake, which you count on. The cynicism is fucking revolting.

Well, then, thank goodness that despite our differences, the GOP remains civic-minded enough to know that—oh.

Even Republicans considered more serious and responsible than the firebrand Tea Partiers of yore are cheerfully promoting McConnell’s strategy.

“I know what they want to do is come later and say ‘oh you’ve got to raise the debt limit, or it’s going to cause our bonds to default and markets to crash and all sorts of terrible things,’ well, that they can avoid entirely, they can avoid all that entirely by taking action during reconciliation,” Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) told reporters Wednesday.

As Trump recedes into the distance it returns to one’s mind how often Mitt was a pandering asshole back in the good old days, before Trump fairly regularly sort of scared him straight.

So every time there’s another debt ceiling threat, add another $20 million in IRS enforcement to the reconciliation bill?
Sounds good.
