Democratic National Convention Delayed A Month Due To COVID-19 | Talking Points Memo

Democratic National Convention CEO Joe Solmones announced on Thursday that the 2020 convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin would be postponed from its original July 13 date as a safety measure against COVID-19 outbreak.

These convention planners need to get with the idea that stadium crowds are inherently dangerous. A month’s delay is not going to do a damn thing to make the virus dissipate. The virus makes its own schedule, not the other way around.

Like I commented yesterday, Abraham Lincoln said it best in 1862:

The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise – with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country.

“After a great deal of scenario planning and giving thought to how it is this event can have the greatest impact in the electoral process and the greatest impact in terms of what we can bring to Milwaukee, we felt the best decision, not knowing all the answers, was to delay this,” he said.

Fine for now.

But they’d better be thinking about some sort of alternative to a physical gathering.

Oh Good it gives Bernie & the Bros more time to piss and moan. He’ll probably say they are delaying it so they can " Rig" it

So, one week before the GOP’s week-long MAGA rally in Charlotte. I wonder which one will be conducted responsibly, and which one will spark another pandemic?

I’ll bet you half a membership that someone close to Sanders already said it

Good news. Better news would be to kick Bernie out entirely now. Biden is the nominee — there is no need go through any further charade just to stroke Bernie’s fragile ego. Even better news will be when the in-person convention is cancelled, replaced by virtual balloting, with the only in-person event being a kick-Sanders-in-the-balls booth.

Bernie, it’s time to drop out, man. You’re a good person, you will still have influence and can make a positive contribution. You know it’s the right thing to do.

August makes sense but, i still think something televised without a crowd, there’s just no need in this day and age

The quadrennial conventions have been obsolete for half a century. They’re not needed unless one candidate has failed to secure a majority in the primaries and caucuses. And if there was such a failure, there are no brokers to facilitate a winner in a contested convention. They are institutions that haven’t been actually used in so long that there is none of the continuity that working institutions rely on to operate. A convention called on in 2020 to actually choose the nominee would have similar results to what happened when the king called the Estates General to meet in 1789, when it hadn’t met since 1614.

What these conventions have been for over half a century is free media, because the media is as incapable as our politicos of adapting to change, and it dutifully covers them despite their status as obvious non-events.

Bottom line, cancelling the things this year is about as no-brainer as decisions get. This, of course will not necessarily keep them from happening, and a decision to go ahead with the usual in-person events would not even rank among the stupidest things our system has done this year.

With regret, I have to agree.

The longer he stays in the race, the less influence he will have.

Completely disagree with this statement. A lot of stupid things happened when denial could be blamed, very charitably, on naivete. To proceed with a mass gathering nine months later is simply criminal.

trump would be so proud of you, he’s been practicing voter suppression for 3 years now.

Try harder not to post stupid shit.

It’s not voter suppression to expect someone who cannot possibly win the nomination to drop out in favor of the only candidate who can win the nomination.

It’s Bernie Cultists like you—who often refuse to vote for the nominee because it ain’t Bernie—who do the damage and elect idiots like Trump.

You need to fuck all the way off.

And the less anyone can still claim he’s a good person.

Bernie is a selfish egotist and relentless self-promoter.

Reminds me of a well-known Republican president . . . but I just can’t put my finger on the name . . .

oohh, stings. I’m convinced that Biden supporters know best now due to your informed and carefully worded response.

If Biden makes it to November he won’t be running against trump anyway, so ask yourself if an entire campaign consisting of “I’m not trump”, will beat Mike DeWine or Charles Baker. I’m hoping Cuomo will change his mind and run.

Bless your little heart.
