Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D- RI) suggested in a recent letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland that the FBI’s background investigation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was “perhaps fake.”
Whitehouse is the source of the happenings on this particular TPM story. With authors, speakers, political actors I weigh not only the words, but the source.
A Whitehouse suggestion is worth about 10,000 Cruz/Hawley/McConnell unequivocal pronouncements.
Well if the FBI was only following Trump’s orders not to investigate too hard, then it gives Republicans the plausible deniability out to have voted to confirm him, say Collins for example.
Collins explained her vote, at the time, on the Senate floor.
“I found her testimony to be sincere, painful, and compelling. I believe that she is a survivor of a sexual assault and that this trauma has upended her life,” she said of Kavanaugh’s accuser, Christine Blasey-Ford.
However, Collins said that the allegations “fail to meet the 'more likely than not’” standard, pointing out a lack of corroborating witnesses.
Can we appoint a Dem to head the FBI next time? We need to get past this weak kneed on security bullshit we’re perpetually stuck in. The GOP doesn’t alway appoint a DEM to head the education department so why do we extend the courtesy to them regarding security issues.
The characterization is perhaps used too frequently, but Sen. Whitehouse “speaks truth to power” very convincingly, without the use of histrionics. For that he is to be wholly respected during this time of blathering politicians.
Wray needs to be fired and Mueller needs to the person who investigates in order to lay open the reasons for this.
Without Comey we would not have had Trump.
Actually the FBI should be defunded, reorganized out of existence with the DEA but that is more than one can reasonably hope for. We could replace it with technically competent professional.
Yeah, the guy who said during the Obamacare debate that the GOP Healthcare plan was to tell the people to GO DIE was probably engaging in too much histrionics. He was right though.
I think the more important question is who paid off Kavanaugh’s debts before he became a SC justice…that’s far more critical to how he might judge cases, and his conflicts of interests, than his parish past. I’m not downplaying that, it’s already clear that Kavanaugh shouldn’t have been nominated or confirmed even without adding in the raping and that just made him so much worse. But, if we want to cast doubt on him, and understand his corrupt decisions, it’s important to see where his debts came from and how they were taken care of when he didn’t have the means to do so.
Yeah, when are people going to start giving Trump and the GQP credit for all of the entitlement money that has been saved by allowing the virus to run rampant and kill 500,000 + seniors?
These are real boots on the ground solutions, people!
ETA: BTW, I thought it was Alan Grayson who said that about GQP healthcare plan.
This seems to be a very clever and direct warning to Kavanagh. If there’s anything more there, Kavanagh will surely know it.
His protectors are gone. So, if Kavanagh does know there’s more, he’ll resign, while probably making a huge hew and cry about cancel culture (and the Fox “commentators” will go ballistic). But if he resigns, his dark money benefactors will take good care of him. He could end up at a think tank or some such.
However, he might be persuaded to go quietly if he really knows his reputation would go in the tank if it all comes out. We’ll just have to see. If there is evidence out there, again, he’ll surely know there’s a really good possibility it will come out now.
The knife-twisting thing about this is that it opens up the potential for additional damning information about kavanaugh while ostensibly being entirely about procedure.
