Dem Sen. Warns Trump Will Have ‘Bigger Voice’ To Peddle Lies About Election If He’s Acquitted

Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) on Tuesday morning sounded the alarm over the potential consequences of his GOP colleagues acquitting President Donald Trump in the impeachment trial over his incitement of a deadly insurrection at the Capitol.

Chris Coons:

“My gut instinct would be of course to allow him to speak in his own defense.”

That’s almost suborning perjury.

Would Trump be under oath? Would any witness?

Does it work like an ordinary trial? Is he under oath and subject to cross-examination? If so it would be foolish to allow him to testify, but… I doubt that would stop him, and his attorneys’ advice would go unheeded.

So sure, go ahead and let him speak.

What do you mean “almost”?

Let the loser talk. He’s his own worst enemy when he does speak and what he says often makes at least some republicans cringe.

The fascistgop is not going to allow tRump to be convicted at any rate but allowing him to speak will actually aid in establishing the legitimacy of his impeachment and will allow Democrats to confront his lies to his face.

It’s not a criminal trial, all that is on the table in an impeachment trial is loss of a job, and possible inability to get a job again. No one has a right to any job of their choosing. Life, liberty and property are not at stake as they are in a criminal proceeding. Therefore the impeached has no rights anyone is bound to respect (shout-out to R. Taney), if they are allowed to speak it is a mere courtesy, one which should be withheld when the subject can be counted on to spew nothing but lies.

It would be more menacing (and Republican) if Coons was quoted as "threatening" rather than “warning”.

It is the GOP which is under threat:

  • Acquit and be under the shadow of Trumpism

  • Convict and incur the wrath of the Trump Base

He should be. If he is, we’ll see a repeat of his deposition act. His legit lawyers did everything possible to avoid going to trial and having him on the stand in public, hence all those settlements.

Very funny!

Anyway, if we’re going to dissect the joke: I hedged because subornation can require an active shove whereas just allowing someone to speak can be construed as being more on the passive side.

And now you’ll ask: What “joke”?!

Wouldn’t make a difference if he was or wasn’t.

Good lord, these people are deluded. The Office of the Former President will be as significant as Trump Steaks as time goes by. But they just don’t get it. Man who failed at every ersatz scam in his life now failed as a pretend president. Spectacularly.

So is he suggesting that Trump should just be let off the hook

As long as Trump is under oath, to paraphrase a famous quote, “Every word he says is perjury, including ‘and’ and ‘the’”.
