Democratic chairs of the House Oversight and Homeland Security committees are demanding that DHS inspector general Joseph Cuffari recuse himself from the investigation into the deleted Secret Service text messages around the time of the Capitol insurrection, following the Washington Post’s report last week about Cuffari’s months-long delay in informing Congress about the missing messages.
Revelations like this continue to gobsmack. Those who pay more attention to the intricacies of Washington bureaucracy may have more insight but this is just GD astonishing to hoi palloi like me.
I’m genuinely hoping that this kind of stuff is a symptom of Trumpism and TFG’s manifest desire to refashion government in his own image rather than some chronic institutional ill.

“cast serious doubt on his independence and his ability to effectively conduct such an important investigation.”
The SService is very insular, and largely Republican/MAGA. Even their IG (officially DHS, but responsible for SS oversight) is part of the clan. Logical decision by Maloney and Thompson.
The letter to Cuffari comes after the Secret Service reportedly determined that it is unable to recover deleted text messages from Jan. 5 and 6, 2021 to the Jan. 6 Select Committee in response to the panel’s subpoena earlier this month. A senior official briefed on the matter told the Washington Post at the time that any other texts that agents exchanged around the time of the deadly Capitol insurrection were purged.
This is huge and heads should roll for allowing those particular messages to disappear. It should hav been clear to everyone that there would be an investigation of government response to Jan 6th, and all records should have been retained. They should have been anyways under government records legislation and rules, and the fact they were all deleted is really indicative of someone trying to cover something up. It’s going to take a serious investigation, with threats of punishment, to get someone to tell what actually happened…and that should be the course, this kind of cover up should never be allowed.
It’s clear that SS agents around Trump are lying to protect him with their attacks on Hutchinson (which they refuse to repeat under oath while others have confirmed her testimony), and that should never, ever have happened. They work for us, not the president, and their attitude needs to be smacked down hard.
Maybe the folks with more understanding of the workings of the innards of the executive branch can tell me if the FBI might be able to step in and investigate this, including attempting to recover or reconstruct the messages?
IIRC, Biden had a few trumpy SS assholes taken off POTUS duty as they were moving into the WH.
Major Biden bit a few others shortly there after…cuz he’s a good boy!
Still a few around apparently.
Odd that the DHS IG–a Trump appointee and an utterly unqualified hack with fake academic credentials–was not immediately fired and replaced by Biden, particularly since the Secret Service was obviously a red flag from day one of the new administration. Another (pointless) attempt at bipartisanship blows up in our faces.
Wondering when this becomes obstruction of justice. He knew he had information about the deleted texts that was relevant to the J6 hearing yet did not report it. He needs to be subpoenaed and investigated. I do not understand why Biden has not purged Trump loyalists from the Government payroll. What possible good could come from keeping Cuffari on as IG?
One of things that bothers me the most about this is the fact that the USSS figured, after their destruction of all pertinent communication was disclosed, they decided to come up with thousands of documents containing pure, unrelated texts and communication to flood and dump on the investigators. Dazzle 'em with bullshit. That was a completely intentional act, and it is malfeasance.
And the fact that the IG of DHS knew all about it, and didn’t report it to Congressional authorities… That, IMO, is a criminal act in itself. He needs to be exposed and pilloried.
