WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says the Trump administration has decided to push the income tax filing date to July 15 from April 15.
Why wouldn’t they coordinate this with the states before they announced it? Don’t most people prepare both returns at the same time? All this is going to do is cause more confusion. Even in the rare instances when they try to do something helpful they still fuck it up.
This is personally good for me. I am stuck in my apartment in one state and my tax information is in my house in another. I was going to ask for an extension but I don’t have to now.
The administration had announced earlier in the week that it would delay the payments, a move that Mnuchin said would leave $300 billion in the economy at a critical time.
i.e. $300 billion more to throw at Wall Street and failing corporations that spent the last year buying back their stock.
Well, shit. Even this AP report glides past the CRUCIAL issue of whether the payment deadline is also extended or not! [deep breath(s)….]
(For anyone who cares) even in ordinary times, when one files for an extension, it doesn’t extend the time when your payment is due. From the 2019 IRS Publication 17 (page 12 of 279; labeled as “Page 10”).
If you don’t pay the tax due by the regular due date (April 15 for most taxpayers), you will owe interest. You may also be charged penalties, discussed later. (emphases added)
OK, after a few more deep breaths, I see Mnuchin did say…
Typically, they don’t address the real issue of when payments are made for many retirees and others who pay most of their taxes on an estimated basis. This retired CPA has already paid most or all of his 2019 taxes. The largest tax payment I have on April 15 is the first estimated tax payment for 2020. It would be nice if they dealt with that issue.
I believe state deadlines are tied to the Federal deadline. However, I’m a retired bass player, albeit one with a reasonable memory for arcane details.
Well… I checked, and whether your state return deadline changes to match the federal deadline is up to the state. (California pushed its back to July 15.)
