The Right Rev. Mariann Budde, the Episcopal bishop of Washington, blasted President Donald Trump on Monday night after he had peaceful protesters teargassed so that he could use St. John’s Episcopal Church, one of her churches, to stage a photo-op.
If he did this to change the “narrative” to one of presidential strength, I’m afraid he won’t be happy with the headlines this morning. It’s all “peaceful protesters” and “photo op” with a sprinkle of “authoritarian” and “strongman” on top. If he did it, however, to change the narrative to “Despite doubts, Trump remains ambulatory,” it was a success. He walked those 140 feet like a walker who walks.
In my opinion the bishop needs to get many many more religious leaders to publicly, in a mass gathering or at least in a well dispersed “letter, “ to support and expand on her position. I would like to see readings from many faith traditions pointing out the pure hypocrisy of those “leaders” always supporting and glorifying Trump, as well as Trump himself.
Yeah I’m not sure church-standing is what the nation needs right now. And if he thinks that was successful they’re getting better at hiding bad news, because I’d call the general response one of quiet but deep disgust.
This from WaPo, the reasoning for what they did yesterday.
"Trump’s decision to speak to the nation from the Rose Garden and to visit the church came together earlier in the day, said one senior White House official, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. The president was upset about news coverage of him briefly retreating to the White House bunker Friday evening amid protests, and he repeatedly wondered why anyone would have disclosed those details to the news media, two officials said.
He was also frustrated by coverage this weekend of his call with the Floyd family, which he believed was positive — Trump called it “a very good call,” an official said — but was portrayed negatively."
