Washington Archbishop Wilton Gregory issued a scathing statement ahead of the President’s visit to St. John Paul II’s National Shrine on Tuesday, which comes a day after his surprise, politically-timed photo-op in front of the historic St. John’s Episcopal Church.
“His legacy bears vivid witness to that truth,” Gregory said. “He certainly would not condone the use of tear gas and other deterrents to silence, scatter or intimidate them for a photo opportunity in front of a place of worship and peace.”
I am proud of Archbishop Wilton here. My husband asked why the church itself was not locked (MY Catholic church here in NM is locked ‘for the duration’ of the covid shutdown) and I don’t have an answer (do not know the specifics of ‘that’ particular spot; maybe permitted open with social distancing in force?). But I noted that there was no ‘welcome committee’ at the church so there is THAT.
It’s the right verbal response, but he’s the Archbishop – does he have no authority to dissuade the planned event from actually happening? He’s acting like a helpless leaf blown by a breeze he doesn’t control, when in fact the Catholic church is incredibly hierarchical and the Archbishop has considerable authority. He doesn’t even need to forbid Trump from attending; saying “all are welcome to worship, but no cameras will be permitted on the private grounds” would be plenty to keep Trump away. It’s the only reason he’s going, after all.
