With more than 6,000 New Yorkers dead of COVID-19, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) announced Wednesday that he’ll issue an executive order to expand absentee voting to all New Yorkers for the June 23 primary.
Clearly Governor Cuomo is just using this COVID-19 situation as a convenient excuse to open up opportunities to vote that will expand the pool of voters to levels that will be detrimental to Republicans seeking office.
Trump’s claim is false. Several states where Republicans have a lot of success, including deep-red Utah, have already moved toward systems where mail-in voting is easy and uncontroversial. Trump, however, has a longstanding animus toward any form of voting that doesn’t require presenting some form of identification at a polling place.
Arizona, likewise is a red state (albeit turning purple) that has had extensive mail-in voting for years and have been pretty consistent at electing GOP guvs and until recently, Senators.
Before I go on my afternoon walk I want to say that I hope all of you Jewish TPMers have a contemplative and meaningful Passover. The symbolism is incredibly powerful in this time of plague and tribulation.
This is what every state should be doing, for the remaining primaries and for the general election. The Republicans will fight it tooth and nail, and not implement it in any state where they hold the governor’s office…the difference should be highlighted as just another indication of how undemocratic the Republican party has become.
The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in NY =138,863. The number deaths due to Covid-19 in NYS =6268. It is hard for me to imagine the GOP in NY suing to stop Cuomo’s executive order. Would the party be that stupid? Maybe.
Voting… a right ? Or a privilege?
Apparently some are of the mind that all of those words in the constitution are just fluff … and there are some who hold that all of the amendments are BS and should be ignored…
And
Apparently there are some who vigorously adhere to the idea that voting is just a privlidge - and a privilege that can have many constraints - the constraints do not have to be equitable … and there is zero responsibility on the part of the government to seek to remove impediments to voting.
FRANKLY, if the Republicans could get away with it … we would see a return to voting by only land owning white males …
Was warned in Nov? GD starting to look a lot more like Bush’s 9/11 warnings and ignoring of previous Democratic admin’s tips. Of course in this case with nothing to gain, like Bush’s oil, just stupidity on Trump’s part.
Except that for a number of states, the GOP has maintained their power in the face of decreasing popular support by disenfranchising their opponents (think WI, GA, FL, NC, etc). Its not a secret that Republican victories in 2010 allowed them to change election laws/gerrymander districts in ways to maintain power even with a minority of the vote.
Trump is correct that anything that broadly expands the vote will, on balance, hurt rather than help the GOP.
