COVID-19 Deaths and Hospitalizations Set Records In New Single-Worst Day | Talking Points Memo

The United States on Wednesday recorded at least 2,760 coronavirus-related deaths — its worst daily death toll due to the virus since the pandemic began. The staggering figure coincided with the single-worst daily hospitalizations total which topped 100,000 on Wednesday as the nation reels from spiking cases nationwide.

The 450k number assumes a 2k average daily death rate over the winter. That’s kind of the expected number right now, but it could break off very rapidly.

We have an opportunity with proper deployment of the vaccine to colder more dense areas to stave off some of the damage, with reasonable measures such as mask wearing and social distancing in other less dense areas where that is far more viable.

If the professionals at the CDC were running the show we would be far more comfortable. Unfortunately there’s a very good chance that this President will interfere and try to mess things up, especially since dense urban areas are not Trump people.

Each successive week we’ll be setting new records for at least the next couple of months. By January, we should be seeing about double yesterday’s death toll each day.

But we won’t.

We all saw this coming.

Stay safe out there, TPMers.

My guess is that this communication to his intended audience was much less effective for using “fait accompli” than “done deal.”

It’s the stupidity, stupid. Per capita the US is literally the dumbest country on the face of the earth (as if we really needed the pandemic to prove this given that Trump won the presidency and got over 74 million votes this time). No other explanation is possible. Sure, a lot of blame can and should be put on Trump & Co. But for fuck’s sake, if you still don’t get it by now and either refuse to wear a mask, because hoax, or think only other people catch and die from the virus, you’re a MORON, PERIOD, and shut the fuck up with the lame excuses about how you’re only around people you know, or you don’t need a mask outside, or only old, fat and sick people catch and die from it, etc. If you catch the virus at this point, it’s on you and no one else.

You would think by this point even Trump would be tired of all this winning in the Corona sweepstakes.

I posted this article on another thread that a friend sent to me. While it doesn’t say which hospital this is, this is what is happening in one hospital. A glimpse into a frightening world where you won’t want to go.
We get complacent and think we’re doing all we can to prevent getting sick, this is just a wake up call for all.

The State Department, White House: They are holding maximum-capacity Christmas parties. Lots of them. My sympathy meter is pegging below zero for the moronic fan base in attendance.

The numbers are horrible. They exceed any previous single day mortality rate in American history. Worse then 9/11.

But those are more then numbers. They are our relatives, friends and neighbours.

In the history books, I hope this era goes down as the Trumpian Death.

And keep in mind that the numbers are actually underestimating the deaths, because there are people dying from other causes who might not have died had the hospitals been less overwhelmed. Reasonable estimates of those deaths would add 30% or so to the numbers.

But even taking just the official numbers, average deaths/day in the US are around 7,600 so this is almost a 40% increase, truly an astounding number.

No, it isn’t. 1. Masks don’t protect the wearer, so if someone refuses to wear one he’s endangering others, not himself. 2. Said asshole can easily pick up the virus and because he’s not wearing a mask, he can infect everyone around him, including those who pass through his wake. Those people are innocent victims.

Really bad, obviously, but isn’t this figure from yesterday (Wednesday, Dec 2) inflated by the catch-up of reporting from the four-day Thanksgiving weekend?

FALSE, as has been repeated ad nauseum, like, ad nauseum. It DOES protect the wearer, only not as much as it protects others. Even 30% protection is STILL PROTECTION.

STOP spreading FALSE information that could LITERALLY get people KILLED!

If you keep repeating this lie, I WILL contact the admins.

From CDC:

Masks offer some protection to you and are also meant to protect those around you, in case you are unknowingly infected with the virus that causes COVID-19.

“Some” is NOT “none”!

To paraphrase a current advertisement, COVID doesn’t care. It doesn’t discriminate, it doesn’t target, it doesn’t judge.
