Court Filing Signals Next Phase In The Fight Over Minnesota Ballot Deadline | Talking Points Memo

The next phase in the Minnesota fight over whether to count properly-postmarked, late arriving mail ballots could focus on whether the Republicans that have sued to reverse the extended deadline should be held to an agreement the Trump campaign made not to challenge it.

IIRC, it only takes four justices to accept a case at SCOTUS, and given there’s Alito, Thomas, Gorsuch, Boofenaugh and now Barrett, I would fully expect this to land there regardless of what the MN state court rules.

Who knew it was going to take a law degree and watching 300 separate lawsuits in addition to 50 states to follow the election this year? This naked attempt to stop votes by the Republicans has got to be one of the most shameless and despicable desperation moves I have ever seen. It is really shocking when you back up and look at the big picture and understand this has been their evolving strategy for years.

I think it’s even more shameless and despicable that so many courts are sanctioning the GOP’s shameless and despicable moves.

Whether another GOP-appointed justice would vote with Roberts and the liberals in that scenario is less clear.

I must have missed the part of Barrett’s background that would make “less clear” the presumption that she would be in step with Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch and Kavanaugh to suppress voting rights.

The court actions that deprive voters of the franchise in myriad ways despite the voters reasonably relying on state instructions to vote are shockingly anti-democratic. Roberts was wrong about the end of discriminatory voting practices in the states when he gutted parts of the Voting Rights Act. I wonder what he thinks of federal courts becoming a partner in voter suppression.

Need we remind the courts and the voters that if mailed in ballots run late it is all because TRUMP appointed his toady Louis deJoy as Postmaster General to deliberately sabotage the Postal Service operations.

Trump and the Republicans must not be allowed to profit and/or benefit from this CRIMINAL ACTIVITY.

They have overplayed their hand, which was full of jokers for some reason in a game of Texas Hold 'Em.

Americans don’t vote for people who don’t support voting by Americans.

To which the New Majority will say the voters had options other than mail-in.

Has he ever voted against any of the gerrymandering or state voter suppression laws that have reached the Supreme Court since he gutted the VRA?

The GOP has given the supreme court options to fuck with the vote totals in MN and PA, and are working to get the TX Harris county (127k contested votes) there. Of course, the SC will not excercize any of those options unless they could flip the national election. With the possible exception of TX, where the Ds are in striking distance of flipping the state House, which would give them a seat at the table during next year’s redistricting.

certainly hope the margin of victory in Minnesota is 10X the number of ballots in question so the whole world can tell the GOP to F-off

“The next phase in the Minnesota fight over whether to count properly-postmarked, late arriving mail ballots”…

Words matter.

They are NOT “late”, if they are legally submitted via mail or otherwise within the laws of the State. That is like saying a huge bundle of votes that have to be driven from some precinct in a far off corner of a large County that get to a central counting center after midnight are “late”. Are they “late”? Fuck NO.

Please be more selective in your language (I will will try as well).

FFS for every GOP lawsuit in a blue state, Team Blue should file similar lawsuits in the reddest parts of three red states. Make the goobers have to fight both sides of the same argument.

I live in Minnesota’s 5th District - Illhan’s - and decided to vote in person this morning due to these type of shenanigans. All was well; everyone voting and working wore masks and kept a safe distance. Election workers controlled the number of people in and out the small gymnasium and provided masks for those who forgot to bring one. Voting booths sanitized after every use. Very safe and well organized. No threatening figures lurking nearby.

Service people and workers living out-of-stste or out of the country?

Registered voters who are hospitalized and/or who have severely limited mobility?

Frankly, “voters had options other than mail-in.” is an extraordinarily lame excuse.

Count every vote, . . .DAMMIT!
