A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo.
The all-Republican Otero County Commission in New Mexico has scheduled an emergency meeting for today to vote on certifying the 2022 primary election results after the New Mexico Supreme Court ordered them to do their jobs and stop holding up the certification process on the basis of MAGA conspiracy theories about Dominion voting machines.
“I tell people my oath is to the people I represent. I did not take an oath to the state of New Mexico or their election laws.”
A few years back, a local prosecutor cross-examined an indicted drug dealer. Things were not going well for the dealer so the defense counsel decided to put the accused on the stand. The dealer revealed that he was trading drugs and sex in exchange for rent. Stunned, the prosecutor asked him to confirm that he admitted to prostituting himself in exchange for rent. He responded, “Them’s y’all’s rules.” Griffin can look forward to a similar experience as the defendant when his game has played out.
The J6C hearings have elicited a lot of talk about how the '24 election is where the Rs will pull their next coup and election denial. Luttig mentioned it frequently. But '22 is already under siege. Most election boards have had big shakeups and tons of R laws have been enacted over elections. Here, Sovereign Dumfugg in NM is already saying he is going to throw out this entire R Primary almost like a test case to see that it can be done.
The video site deleted the file uploaded by the panel on Tuesday showing testimony from former Attorney General William Barr because it also included the former president’s election lies. “We had glitches where they moved thousands of votes from my account to Biden’s account,” Trump baselessly states in the excerpt, adding that the Department of Justice and FBI may have been involved in the imagined plot against him. The clip that the panel uploaded didn’t include Barr’s repeatedly stated belief that Trump’s stolen election claims were wrong. In a statement, YouTube spokesperson Ivy Choi said: “Our election integrity policy prohibits content advancing false claims that widespread fraud, errors or glitches changed the outcome of the 2020 U.S. presidential election, if it does not provide sufficient context. We enforce our policies equally for everyone, and have removed the video uploaded by the Jan. 6 committee channel.”
I’m not a resident of New Mexico, but as a public school teacher in OK, I had to sign loyalty oaths to the state a few times. (I have no idea why I had to do it more than once, but not every year.) A cursory Google search shows that the Secretary of State’s website indicates that yes, he would have had to take just such an oath.
Oath Of Office
The Constitution of the State of New Mexico Article XX Section 1.(Oath of Officer.), reads, “Every person elected or appointed to any office shall, before entering upon his duties take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation that he will support the constitution of the United States and the constitution and laws of this state, and that he will faithfully and impartially discharge the duties of his office to the best of his ability.”
I could definitely be wrong here, but it looks as if he would have had to take the oath. Of course, it seems to me that a good number of people of his political persuasion seem to think that an oath is really just a formality and not, as a formal promise.
The ex-president is a little unhappy about how the House Jan. 6 Committee’s hearings have been featuring nary a Trump toady to disrupt the panel’s presentation of its damning discoveries, and he took to his fake Twitter app on Thursday to howl about the committee’s “one sided” hearings “go endlessly and aimlessly on (and on and on!).”
His time was spent committing the crimes of which he is GUILTY!
You know I was listening to the hearing where they had Barr testifying on NPR, I got to hear “bullshit” on NPR. Unfiltered and unedited. Seems strange that YouTube has a problem with the official public record being unedited.
Well, I think it’d be hilarious as an SNL skit. As real life… I dunno… it’s a little frightening. I mean, the guy doing the grade-school “unfriending” here had the unchecked authority to launch nuclear missiles.
Otero County, New Mexico, is completely dependent on government checks to exist. There is no water. There is an Air Force Base, an Army missile range, and a branch college. The highway department, and Army Reserve provide a few more jobs. Naturally everyone there hates the government and votes R.
Regarding: " Trump’s Election Theft Lawyers Didn’t Buy Their Own B.S." I think the vast majority of MAGA supporters already know that most of what ‘Dear Leader’ and his minions say is BS. However, they don’t punish their leaders for 2 reasons: 1. The MAGA elite is ‘fighting the good fight’, 2. They think that even though the MAGA leaders may be factually incorrect, they are ‘morally’ correct. Dem administrations are structurally illegitimate because their supporters are “those people”: darkies, femmes, immigrants, Antifa, BLM, etc. Their votes simply should not count as much as those cast by the ‘Real Americans’, and thus Mr. Trump is correct in saying that the election was ‘stolen’.
In this case, I dont mind Gov Gavin spending a little daily time to tell some Truth about all the lies being (still) told on twitter knock off maga truth bs.
Trying to overthrow the country is fine. Fine. Just, you know, watch your language while you do it. Wouldn’t want to offend anyone. Something. Something. Terms of Service. Something.
