For more than a day between Monday night and Tuesday evening this week, Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) captured the country’s attention with an extraordinary speech protesting President Trump. Booker’s 25 hours-plus remarks on the Senate floor broke a more than 60-year-old record while earning hundreds of thousands of views and hundreds of millions of likes…
When Chuck Schumer interrupted, without permission, Cory Booker to tell him that he broke the record, did anyone else find this wildly inappropriate? Is anyone else as offended as I am by Chuck Schumer basking in somebody else’s glory?
It’s entirely possible that I am completely off the mark here, which is why I’m asking the question. Cory Booker laughed, but it’s time a lot more Democrats say, “no” to Schumer.
Hunter says progressives are eager for more opposition. Who are they and what are they proposing?
I had the same feeling. It WAS inappropriate. I’m still angry when I think of it.
In all honesty, I was hoping I was just misunderstanding the social interaction. I’m neurodivergent and sometimes completely miss social cues, or worse, see them where they’re not there.
No, I saw that, if it had been anyone else I don’t think we’d being having as strong a reaction. It gave Booker the chance to, one, say “no” to Shumer, which reinforced that Booker was not following some master plan devised by the leadership, and two, it gave him the opportunity to dismiss the record-breaking part of it out of hand. Who cares, he basically said. I’m doing this for way more important reasons.
So, yeah, I think the attempted interruption was a good thing. The world (okay, a sliver of the world) was watching for that moment, and it came off pretty good.
I have a feeling Booker had an awareness of how long he’d been speaking. Not sure it was necessarily for Schumer to interrupt Booker to take note of it.
"While Booker clearly believed this was a time for drastic action, he does not agree with the calls to use unanimous consent and other tools to dramatically slow down Senate business.
“That’s something that my colleagues and I discuss around, and round, and round: What are the tactics available to us? The challenge with taking steps like that is the Senate is the kind of place … when you break it, it never gets fixed,” Booker said."
He still doesn’t get it.
“In the beginning … I had a different spirit. I didn’t know that he would go to that many extremes as he did,” Booker said. "
Really? Didn’t he pardon insurrectionists who beat the sh*t out of cops right out of the gate. After that he wasn’t sure how extreme he would get. Don’t get me wrong, I think the 25 hour filibuster was a great action. I still think that too many of them still think this is business as usual. It’s up to us folks. Find a protest this Saturday and show up rain or shine.
Hi Hornblower.
If you check out the USA Today article I link when talking about procedural tools it goes into greater detail on this!
Good stuff but I always worry about confusing progressive with democrat. Peace!
All respect to NJs own, and props to Senator Booker for his commitment and for having the bladder control of a much younger man. I must assume that he or one of his staff saw Burt Reynolds at the EST weekend in Semi-Tough.
Anybody with a lick of sense would have a piss-pot tied to each calf.
Senator Booker, always a class act. Always presidential.
OH YEAH… Schumar has to be ‘retired’ his rhetoric is getting old, same old stuff…i’m even older. and i want to see the younger people have moRe power…its their world, now. not SCHUMAR’S.
SCHUMAR is like TRUMPF…he wants to be involved in whatever someone else is doing to get attention…another old man trick…interupt!
Publicity loving Corey Booker is making content for his 2028 presidential primary campaign commercials. End of story. His stunt did nothing substantive to impede Trump/musk. His gestural performance art antics are actually distracting from the massive protests that are happening by people even in red states and the creative legislation happening in NY state to go after Tesla subsidies. Rather than use the historic disaster as an opportunity to advance his career he could maybe take a look at what Bernie and AOC are doing right now. Thank fucking god we have at least those 2. Liberal voters need to stop confusing gestures for strategic action. Remember those stupid pussy hats? Watching msnbc harder and canceling your Washington post subscription is not going to cut it.
