Originally published at: Cory Booker Just Gave The Longest Speech In The History of The US Senate
Only two men have spoken on the floor of the U.S. Senate for more than 24 straight hours. One of them fought to keep Black people out of public life, the other was a Black leader who staged a landmark protest. On Tuesday at 7:19 p.m., Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) surpassed the late South Carolina…
There will be more openings and Democrats need to take them all: regular procedure is bunk.
PS: good to see Thurmond taken off the record books too; symbols mean something and, given Thurmond’s oeuvre, this is not a small one.
Eat brimstone, Strom!
I’m glad I chose not to be a cynic about this, because Booker has achieved something of note and of value.
Thank you Senator.
He’s still going!
24 hours 36 minutes so far!
A modicum of hope. Thank you Senator Booker. Now let’s use Mr Booker’s initiative to motivate the hoi polloi (yes, us!) and get rid of the orange fungus. Any ideas?!
Bravo, sir, bravo.
Now, keep your head down against the MAGAts that have drawn a larger target on your back for criticizing their Dear Leader. Also, for your family.
Didn’t Seab Cooley do that in Advise and Consent?
And still focused, full of energy and totally on point - “Impressive Skywalker!” :
He’s still speaking!
He’s also still speaking on topic (more or less, there are a fair number of uncompleted thoughts and orphaned clauses, which is understandable) with passion and energy.
24 hours and 42 minutes and still going!
Senator Cory Booker is my hero!
Dems, THIS is what to do!
Also, thanks to Adam Schiff for putting a hold on Ed Martin.
How far into prime time can he go? Really extraordinary. No reading Dr. Seuss here!
Did he just encourage the gallery to be defiant? Ha!
As he reached the record he told a John Lewis story. Some years after the terrible beating he suffered, the man who did it brought his son to see Lewis. He asked for Lewis’s forgiveness. Lewis said we all need mercy and forgave him.
But he never forgot. And that’s crucial.
Heck, he could have spent several hours just reading all of the accusations that didn’t make it to court.
h/t @ralph_vonholst
Almost 8 p.m. and he’s still going strong. Will other Dems take up the banner when he can no longer carry on?
If you’re referring to this particular filibuster, then no, the rules don’t allow them to to do that. Once he stops, it’s over.
Tomorrow will be the test, but so far, the press I have seen is covering the speech’s duration and not the content.
If that’s how it stands, another loss for the “librul meedia.”
