Yes, you’re right, the main culprits are Republicans. Some Democrats went hard. Coons, however, was among those Democrats who decided, in the end, that it was better to “look forward not back” and to simply give in to Republican obstruction at impeachment. Infamously, he said he had a Valentine’s date he needed to get to. So no, he doesn’t get credit for fighting in that crucial moment. As for whether impeaching Trump would affect voter suppression: the things are different, but also linked. The GOP is all in on voter suppression because they are committed to holding on power by any means necessary, not least because they are linked to Trump and that’s what he wants. If Trump were in jail, no doubt the GOP would still be gerrymandering and suppressing–because that’s the course they’ve committed themselves to since 2000. But it’s hard to imagine the GOP would be nearly as radical or as corrupt if they didn’t have a would-be dictator lashing them on – a man who, by the way, showed that it’s possible to launch a dictatorial coup, fail, and not be held accountable for it. And yes, I hold the Democrats in the Senate accountable for not pushing hard enough to at least show the public how serious that was. A year on, we’re still just starting to dig for stuff any half-serious questioning of witnesses would have discovered when people we’re still shocked and appalled by January 6. Now it’s all just more partisan noise.
