The April call was, in your words, ‘perfect and benign’ like bashfully asking a girl to go to the prom.
The July 25 call was like the discussion in the car after the prom in which the guy basically says, “Put out now or I’ll dump you by the side of the road with no ride home and in a place where you’re likely to get assaulted and raped by a street gang.”

It’s more like bribery and extortion of the math teacher just before the prom so that he can’t serve as chaperone at the prom, thereby giving the mean cheerleader girl a window of opportunity to tie a bucket of black bug’s blood to the rafters tied to a rope that can be pulled as the wrong girl wins the prom award as loveliest prom girl and gets to wear a sparkly princess crown.

Every time one of these folks talks about all of the evidence being from second-hand knowledge (which in itself is a lie), I am prompted to wonder why they are blocking the testimony of people who most certainly do have first-hand knowledge. Perhaps the interviewers could ask about that.

If only he would stick to the script, he’d be fine… Promising that in the public press gaggle, bad idea… Now they’re stuck either continuing to stonewall and hide it, which means everyone will conclude it must have something bad in it, or they release some version of it, and it either has bad stuff, or has been edited to remove things, and we go through all the testimony from other people who heard the call…

Sondland almost certainly heard the extortion demands directly from Trump, but he’s still playing dumb by insisting that his understanding of the transaction came from Rudy. Bolton and Mulvaney have direct knowledge and are refusing to testify. But of course, the read-out memo makes the “I would like you to do us a favor though” 100% explicit. There is no way to deny what the president confessed.
