If the White House is forced to cite the 14th Amendment as it navigates House Republicans’ debt-ceiling hostage-taking gambit, we will have entered a “constitutional crisis,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Sunday, days after President Biden left the option open as some members of Congress continue to signal they may well shoot the hostage.
We are being prepped for the real possibility of Biden invoking the 14th amendment. That would be a good thing, after an initial overreaction, but we can then put this ridiculous repeat scenario behind us for good.
It wouldn’t be a good thing if the world economy crashes before the issue of the 14th can be resolved. That’s exactly what would happen, given how long it will take to move through the courts. Recession guaranteed, interest rate skyrocketing guaranteed.
How much pain do we want to suffer to get it resolved once and for all, and how confident are we that the current SCOTUS won’t shoot it down?
My forelorn hope is that the major corporations and financial sector donors will bring down the hammer and cause enough R’s in the House to vote with Dems for a clean debt limit raise.
Just as in the military and police, many corporations are run by Nazis, fascists and Christian nationalist zealots. Much of corporate leadership is firmly in the camp of the GOP. Maybe money trumps politics. Maybe not. Evidently McCarthy is willing to have a look.
My thoughts keep coming back to how many newly-elected GOP reps from NY there are, and how challenging their re-election prospects already look. Screwing up the global economy isn’t actually a winning look in those parts.
Republicans will most surely nominate Trump as their candidate for President in the next election. So we somehow assume the GOP will ultimately choose what is in the best interest of the nation regarding the debt ceiling?
It will be a efffen disaster. They are betting they can sell the press the story that it was all President Biden’s fault. tfg wins the prez job, and the GOP has found the highest possible cliff to drive over.
Congress Has Pushed US Toward ‘Constitutional Crisis’ On Debt Limit, Yellen Says
No.
Not “Congress”.
The radical loony wing of the House GOP and their historically feckless sock puppet, Squeaker McCardboard. Them and only them. Let’s give “credit” where “credit” is due. (And, with a nod to the 14th Amendment, not question it.)
