Colorado GOP Gov Nominee Claims to Have Battled ‘Demons’ With ‘Reptilian’ Eyes

Victor Marx was deep in the jungle and crippled by a fever when he was attacked.  The self-described “high-risk missionary” and Republican gubernatorial nominee in Colorado claims he traveled to Myanmar to train “warriors” involved in secretive unspecified relief operations. Before accepting his teachings, Marx said the group wanted to assess his skills. Without warning,…

Victor Marx sounds like he’s got a mental disease, or he’s the ultimate conman. And where is Jesus in all of Marx’s teachings?

I have the same question.. but I’m leaning towards conman. He seems self-aware enough to avoid answering the tough questions rather than spouting off true-believer garbage when facing these reporters or in his debate. I think he’s just a huckster who has found his niche.

And people think I’m weird because I know so much Buffy trivia. At least I don’t believe it.

This portrayal of the Other as demonic goes back to medieval Europe, especially after the Crusades got started. There it was literal portrayal: there’s a wonderful art history book called something like Demons, Saracens, and Jews tracing the visuals.

Though there’s no question that I’m voting for Weiser in the fall, I should start following the local news more when they report on Marx. It will be comic relief.

“According to Marx, when the soldiers charged him, he was able to handily defeat ‘more than ten’ men at once armed only with a ‘trainer blade’ made of ‘thick plastic.’ Along with this story of a wild skirmish in the jungle, ‘Dangerous Gentleman’ contains multiple tales of Marx doing battle with ‘demons’ who had taken control of people. His detailed descriptions include claims that one man ‘transformed’ in front of him, developing ‘pointy’ ears and ‘superhuman strength.’ In another episode, Marx said a ‘demonized’ teenage girl ‘turned reptilian’ before his eyes.”

This guy is either a barking loon or a cynical conman, but the fact that over 200,000 adults in Colorado voted for him is even more disturbing, because they either believe this guy or know he’s a complete liar and support him anyway.

IMNSHO, it’s the latter, and their sense of tribalism would compel them to vote for Hannibal Lecter or Charles Manson if he had an “R” after his name – and that 40% of Republican voters simply want to hurt and smash and kill:

“It’s one step from spiritual warfare to actual physical warfare. Because you are saying…that the people across from you are not simply your political opponents who have different policy ideas than you…These are not people who disagree with you on what to do as a democratic community. These are people who are demons. They smell like sulfur. They are inhabited by the devil. They are not like us.”

Victor Marx is not the problem; his voters are.

Doug Mastriano may not be as crazy as Victor Marx, but he still is nuts.

In 2022, over 590,000 Pennsylvanians voted for Doug Mastriano in the Republican primary for Governor.

Even though Josh Shapiro handedly won the general election, 2.2 million Pennsylvanians actually voted for Mastriano.

Currently there doesn’t seem to be much to worry about as Weiser is leading Marx by about 17 percentage points.
But the recent interview material that I’ve seen about Marx makes no mention of the people he’s killed or the demon’s he’s battled. Rather he’s sounding sort of normal - talking about water policy and a governer’s office annex on the Western Slope. But he still thinks Tina Peters should be pardoned, and that’s a hard no with a lot of local people.

Crazy is a feature, not a bug in the Colorado GOP.

Demon here (*waves hoof*). Speaking from demonic experience, he’s not crazy, he’s a conman and people vote for him because they’re in a cult. Not just the MAGA cult but a religious one as well, where even if you have doubts, you sure as hell don’t voice them for risk of being ostracized from the community. Colorado Evangelicals are as wacko as they come.

Standards are really getting high in today’s GOP. It used to be you could just teleport to Waffle House to prove you’re crazy.

My son lives in Denver, says the rural areas are a bit crazy. Boebert Country.

It seems like an unsettling number of folks have one foot in the middle-ages.

Man, it’s sometimes tough living in Colorado. There are a lot of good things happening. Our statewide offices are all held by Democrats, and there’s a good chance we will gain a legislative supermajority this term.

But then there are the crackpots. Lauren Boebert and Tina Peters, for example. I used to think these were the bottom of the barrel.

But Victor Marx is a breed apart.

I yearn for the good old days when things were simple. If you talk to God, you are praying. If God talks to you, you belong in a padded cell. Now these folks are somehow getting elected, or at least winning primaries. God help us. (Please don’t respond. Thanks.)

While the rural areas are heavily GOP, Boebert represents a district on the Front Range and a large number of her voters are the wealthy suburbanites of heavily republican Douglas County. She transferred there from our “rural area” after winning by a mere 546 votes in 2022 - before her meltdown in a Denver theater.

Our conversation was a few years ago, before she transferred. When I asked how did she keep getting re-elected…
