Maine House Speaker Sara Gideon (D), Sen. Susan Collin’s Democratic opponent, took a shot at the Maine Republican after the New York Times published a new allegation against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh over the weekend.
“I’m tired of hoping that Susan Collins does the right thing when she has shown time and time again that she puts Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell ahead of Mainers.”
Yesterday, I wrote Senator Collins a note on her website (I’m from Maine, she’s my senator), essentially asking her to explain how she feels about the new revelations in the Times, especially in light of her comment of [insert quote from her October 2018 speech in which she defended her vote for Kavanaugh] and [insert another quote that makes her look exceptionally foolish given the recent reporting] and even [insert third quote]. And I asked for a response to my comment. The response I got back today was effectively boilerplate rubbish:
Dear Friend,
Thank you for contacting me through my website. Your views are important to me, and input from my constituents is very helpful when I consider the many important issues facing our nation.
Again, thank you for writing.
I doubt I’ll get sent another, more detailed accounting of her idiotic hypocrisy when she realizes this is turning into a firestorm. She doesn’t care and she’s not listening. But I did get some joy in writing about it…
Collins is in real trouble, women in Maine are really pissed about this, and the new reporting is going to make that even worse for her. It really shouldn’t even matter if Kavanaugh did it or not, the way he behaved on the stand, and the other lies he told, plus his judicial record, should have been enough for Collins (and other moderate Republicans) to kick him out the door. Collins deserves extra scorn for her floor speech defending her decision, because it gave cover for any other wavering Republicans. She deserves this anchor, and hopefully it pulls her down.
Send a snail-mail letter. They actually collate and respond to those (assuming you’re accurate and your return address is in their district/state). The online portals are just full of spam, so you’ll never get through that way (unless using it as a constituent asking for specific help, which usually is on a different link than just giving input).
Her office gives the same ‘non response’ to a letter. Writing a letter to the paper does get read, if published, by her staff. More importantly, other voters. Maine voters do read the paper.
Thank you for contacting her office. She needs to know that she can’t take the women’s vote for granted. I agree, Kavanaughs record and his conduct during questioning should have disqualified him. But she got her panties in a wad over the protests from women opposed to the judge. Her speech was shrill and shameful. But it was her vote on the tax bill that Maine voters will relate to, and hopefully remember next November.
I know little about politics in Maine, but choosing to back Kav was the death of her political career. I have thought from the beginning that the women who backed him will be the ones to pay the price. I can almost forgive a man for not completely comprehending the fear Dr. Ford experienced that day, but just about every single woman in this country has known some version of it at some time in her life. And, whether one was willing to admit it or not, everyone knew Dr. Ford was telling the truth.
I am sending a campaign contribution to the Democratic challenger every single month till I max out. A woman right is what she traded away. I hope she loses painfully badly. losing power collins will suffer not as badly as those poor women in southern states who will not be able to get abortions. back 50 years we go
Most people probably don’t know this about Collins: she’s received awards and praise from Planned Parenthood which makes her support of Kav even more troublesome. She fooled them, she’s fooled her constituents, but it’s going to end.
