The original civil rights groups who challenged Texas’ new gerrymandered maps back in August of this year have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to reinstate a lower court ruling that would temporarily block the use of the redistricted map in the 2026 elections. The involvement of the Supreme Court in the dispute over Texas’s recently…
Are we taking any bets?
Doesn’t it make sense that the SCOTUS-6 would say let the maps go on because civil rights is not something they’re interested in adjudicating?
And what happens once California sets their new maps up - SCOTUS-6 shuts them down without comment?
Delays on either one for long enough to impact the midterms in favor of the GQP?
i fully expect the USSCt to stay the injunction pending a decision on the merits. Just like they did with, I think it was Louisiana. The Court is affecting all manners of rights without actually “deciding” the merits. It seems like there is a plan to let Trump do what he wants, and then eventually rule that Trump’s actions were improper setting down rules that will restrict/hamper a Democratic President in 2029.
I am sure that political actors will make political decisions.
The fascist 6 will decide in favor of Fascism.
So the SC Justices are enablers in screwing over Americans. But are their offence high crimes and misdemeanors?
Good luck with the Roberts Court making the correct decision when it come to Civil Rights.
Texas and SCOTUS have a problem. The challenge to the California ballot initiative and redrawn maps has not yet been heard, has not been stayed, and so is not before SCOTUS. Meanwhile, the California primaries for 2026 are a couple of months away. It is possible there’s no way to stop the California offset if the new Texas maps are enjoined. Hoist… petard… something, something.
That’s a gentle way of saying that they’re openly hostile to civil rights as a concept, and to representative democracy in general. They stand against it at every opportunity and make the barriers to enforcement insurmountable, and the lovely dancer Ms. Stare Decisis has lost her hold on them recently. If they manage to let this go forward in TX and then shut it down in California, then any shred of their legitimacy is gone.
If the Democrats decide to contest those gerrymandered seats they just might win them. The GOP has made them pretty Hispanic. Of course that will require the Democrats to stand up for the economic interests of regular Texans. That might be a bridge too far for a lot of traditional democrats who spend their time advancing the interests of a minority of Americans while demonizing the rest.
