Looking at the US presidential race, it is surprising how Trump’s poor performance at the start of the covid pandemic that resulted in a half million excess deaths is not called out repeatedly and loudly. Costly lockdowns, the only recourse for poor countries, were seen as a choice, while much cheaper strategies (all of which are now vindicated by empirical evidence) such as proper wearing of proper masks, vaccination rollouts that focus on two-shot regimes and vulnerable persons first, public information and even test-and-trace in countries that could turn around PCR tests in 15 hours, were treated with skepticism by Trump. Overall, the data in TheLancet study regarding excess mortality does not support the contention that the United States has had the worst response in the world. This appears to be a statistical argument that does not consider the underreporting in many countries. However, the data does show that the United States is below average in the world and among the worst in the developed and high-income nations. We need to learn the lessons of this pandemic, reform our health care system, and improve messaging along with public acceptance of mitigation strategies. The United States can and must do better.
Doing better starts with not reelecting a public health disaster like Donald Trump.
