BEIJING — China reported just three new coronavirus cases Monday, and no new deaths for the 12th day in a row.
Hummm…that’s kind of hard to believe…
Exactly what I came here to say.
I wonder how good their testing is? Are they doing autopsies on all deceased to see if the virus was the cause in an asymptomatic carrier
I believe reports from China on the same level I believe Trump.
China also reports no new whistleblowers, suspecting that all have been rounded up and silenced…
“They had only three cases. Then it disappeared - like magic - like I said it would. It’s getting to be summer over there with all the heat and stuff. And the little people have been faithfully sipping their Clorox tea every day. So ‘POOF!’ it’s gone. Just like that. It’s a beautiful thing, right Deborah?”
Well, sure, that’s what they’ve reported.
Meanwhile:
The risk exists that incentives would develop within China to underreport, or even to ignore, a possible new outbreak, whether linked to imported cases or domestic cases. Local and regional leaders, as happened with the initial outbreak, could seek to hide new and emerging cases. After all, the government propaganda apparatus seems now to have concluded that China is winning its war against the virus and that it is time to restart the economic engine. In such a scenario, it is doubtful if a local or regional leader would have the incentive to report possible new cases. Why risk exposure and throwing sand into the soon-to-restarted machine? Finally, with China having embarked on a global goodwill and PR tour, seeking to absolve itself of responsibility, new cases of the virus would not fit into the governmental propaganda mantra and would actively counter its message that China, its high-tech healthcare approach, and its governance system are uniquely suited to combat the virus.
While China has made enormous gains in combating the virus, and seems to have managed to flatten the curve, the world should not automatically embrace the new numbers coming from the country. With a cautious note about China’s statistical unreliability in mind, we should continue to closely observe the country’s health situation and remain watchful of future developments.
Authors are Scott Romaniuk (Security Studies, China Institute, University of Alberta) and Tobias Burgers (Keio University, Tokyo).
If China doesn’t want to report the real data, the real data doesn’t get reported by anyone. A few ‘disappearances’ have seen to that. It has nothing at all to do with the quality of their testing.
Yes, and nobody in North Korea was (or ever will be!!!111!!!) infected.
There is this bridge I can sell you, it’s in Brooklyn, very good shape, not even frequently used…
And I’ve got a bridge . . .
China reported just three new coronavirus cases Monday, and no new deaths for the 12th day in a row.
Like hearing the report out of FOX News, or the Kremlin… maybe yes… likely no… always missing something.
Given the size and scope…sounds preposterous .
They.Are.Lying.
Russia is going to be continually leaking cases into China.
China has been trying very hard to eradicate this virus from their country. I don’t know the degree to which they have succeeded and outbreaks can start with one person. But they have tried to do that.
We have not.
New Zealand is the only place which looks to have succeeded in this endeavor.
