Editor’s note: Nicole is taking some much-deserved time off around her birthday this week, so other TPM staffers will be filling in on Where Things Stand. She’ll be back on Tuesday Oct. 13. ‘So That No One Will Escape’ So-called “challenge coins” have become particularly popular souvenirs in the Trump era. Some have been distributed…
What’s there to say? Abolish ICE now.
I believe the technical term is “what the actual f–k?”
We can abolish ICE.
What we cannot abolish or rid ourselves in any way, shape or form is:
The people who see that motto and think:
- “Good.”
- “That’s how it should be.”
- “They deserve it.”
- “We need more of that.”
The place the nation is edging toward where:
- cruelty is normalized
- dehumanization is mainstream
- “toughness” is equated with brutality
- enforcement is treated like warfare
- immigrants are framed as invaders
- and anything that looks militarized gets applause
“There is no hunting like the hunting of man.” - there are people who nod and don’t flinch from this. It’s a cultural shift that we’re all watching from here and not knowing exactly where it will end.
- Some Americans are horrified by this kind of imagery.
- Some Americans are energized by it.
We remember when immigration enforcement was bureaucratic, not theatrical.
Procedural, not performative.
Serious, not sadistic.
And now we’re watching a segment of the population cheer for the darkest version of it.
When did all of this become ‘normal’ and/or accepted?
- skull logos on federal gear
- “Punisher” imagery in DHS
- ICE coins depicting skeleton Statues of Liberty
- rhetoric about “hunting humans”
- mass deportation operations branded like military campaigns
There is no bottom. Disgusting
They are mentally, intellectually, morally and ethically challenged.
And they vote.
They aren’t law enforcement. They are just a bunch of thugs who like hurting people.
As the kids say today, All Cops Are Bullies.
According to the playbook:
Fascism is a far-right, authoritarian, and ultranationalist political ideology that places the nation and often a specific racial or ethnic group above the individual.
Core Characteristics
-
Extreme Nationalism: Promotes hyper-national pride, a belief in national or racial superiority, and a fixation on national decline or victimhood.
-
Dictatorial Leadership: Centers power on a single, infallible leader who claims to embody the will of the people and demands total loyalty.
-
Rejection of Democracy and Liberalism: Opposes parliamentary democracy, pluralism, individual human rights, and free speech.
DHS didn’t respond to TPM’s questions. Don’t let up! TPM needs to harangue them about this until they get answers.
Hunting humans: Holy Shit. This is what we’ve come to.
No one will escape.
Republicans have a funny way of defining ‘freedom’.
…it?
“Dozens of shots were fired into a crowd.” Ho hum.
How do these differ from gang signs? Other than someone is monetizing them?
On another topic, this P.O.S. was sentenced by an Ohio judge today for killing his wife back in February. Caleb Flynn cried in court and claimed he was innocent before sentencing but alas still got life without the possibility of parole. Flynn did not testify at his trial in his own defense, nor did anyone else. His dead wife’s father told the court that the family had forgiven the uxoricide but asked the judge for the max sentence. Flynn’s daughter says she will not visit him in prison.
Flynn was a music pastor at the Living Word Church in Vandalia, Ohio, a town that ought to but does not have an onion named after it. There, at age 36, he obtained carnal knowledge of a 20 year old church intern, told her that he hated his wife, wanted to kill her, and eventually killed her.
I mention this only because, well, at least something went well today.
