Cheney: Jan. 6 Committee Has ‘Firsthand Testimony’ Trump Resisted Pleas To Stop Attack | Talking Points Memo

Reps. Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Bennie Thompson (D-MS), both of whom chair the Jan. 6 committee, on Sunday said that the panel has heard testimony that offers insight into the communications to former President Trump on the day his supporters breached the Capitol.

I think Cheney has plans to run in 7 or 11 years.

I believe she’ll fail.

TFG is going to shit himself, which is exactly the panic that Thomson and the Jan 6 Committee are stoking. “Eyewitness testimony” tells Donnie that somebody from the inner (if not innermost) circle has flipped. He’s going to go ballistic.

I think it’s also important for the American people to understand how dangerous Donald Trump was.

One would certainly hope that Liz was simply not thinking it through. Of course Trump was dangerous, the bigger issue is that since the GOP has done nothing but support him he is now even more dangerous.

Asked if he believes Trump’s lack of action on Jan. 6 warrants a criminal referral, Thompson replied… “If there’s anything that we come upon as a committee that we think would warrant a referral to the Department of Justice, we will do that. And that’s our oath as members of Congress,” Thompson said. “So it’s not just that. It’s any of the other things we’re looking at. If there’s any confidence on the part of our committee that something criminal we believe has occurred, we will make the referral.”

I’m sure there is plenty meriting criminal referrals…

This makes sense. As I was saying in another post, maybe DOJ is waiting for the committee to finish their investigation and present evidence before they proceed with criminal charges. There’s obviously a political component to charging a former president and/or members of his family and administration. Having the committee present the evidence to the American people first isn’t going to convince the GOP base that Trump committed crimes, but it’ll go a long way in convincing everybody else. Especially if Cheney and Kinzinger are doing the convincing.

Cheney also said that “firsthand testimony” detailed pleas by Trump’s daughter Ivanka and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) for the then-President to put a stop to the deadly attack.

I’m going with Jared as the ‘firsthand testimony’.

Depends how the dumpster era pans out. Even the culture war issues that she could fall back on are being torn asunder by current events. Can’t just run on fiscal conservatism now can she?

Sec State at best, we have years to see what happens.

Chris Christie this morning was still playing the what-aboutism card on ABC along with his female GOP partner. Evidently, Trump’s plan to annul the election and declare Martial Law is something that happens every four years.

Your keyboard…music to my ears. A vile, corrupt man, quite used to lawlessness. In the case of Trump, he is one of those people whose being held accountable means a victory in the individual instance and an even more victorious example of the Rule of Law for this nation.

That was the model the DOJ followed in the Watergate scandal; they prosecuted the burglars more-or-less immediately, but everyone else, after.

July 1973: public hearings
Mar 1974: indictments

The Thompson/Cheney statements today are psychological warfare of the highest order against TFG and his minions. This is a delicious squeeze and I’m loving it. Somewhere down the road we’ll find out what this morning’s words will have elicited from the bad guys. And just imagine what terrors and what mad denial the air-tight silence surrounding the DOJ conjures in these shitbums. I revel in the suffering at camp Mar A Lago. I do.

Three more days of Christmas, according to my church this morning…

But no ladies dancing, at least, this morning.

Cheney and Thompson’s comments follows Trump’s plea last week for the Supreme Court to halt the committee’s investigation. The former president re-upped his argument that the panel’s investigation is illegitimate by painting the committee’s investigation as an effort by Congress to have him arrested over the Capitol insurrection, telling the court last week that the panel’s real goal is to set the stage for a “criminal prosecution” of the former president.

If the shoe fits…don’t want to be prosecuted criminal, well then do criminal things.
Easy peasy lemon squeezy
