Cheney Denies Reported ‘Dispute’ Within Jan. 6 Committee

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), vice chair of the Jan. 6 Select Committee, on Sunday denied there is a dispute among members of the panel over whether to issue a criminal referral for former President Trump.

I watched the interview. She was crystal clear that Trump and his cronies knew what they were doing was criminal, that they went ahead and did it anyway. Her sharpest criticism was for Kevin McCarthy. She is a great spokesperson for the committee. She came across as very measured.

“It’s absolutely clear that what President Trump was doing, what a number of people around him were doing, that they knew it was unlawful,” Cheney said. “They did it anyway.”

Why is the NYT reporting on things this way? A discussion on what to do with the evidence the committee is collecting isn’t a dispute, that implies there is a fight on the committee to keep Trump out of legal trouble, which isn’t the case. They are discussing how the politics might affect the DoJ investigation, and trying to steer clear of anything that looks like influence, and have opinions on what that means. That’s it, no nefariousness, no interference to save Trump’s ass, it’s trying to figure out how to go forward once they produce their report.

The Times decision to report this as a full blown dispute is really questionable, and makes me wonder why they would take that editorial direction. Everyone just needs to stop trying to push the result they want and allow the evidence to speak to what happened, and then go forward based on that. The rest of this is just noise that distracts from what happened.

O/T but
Lizelle Herrera was arrested Thursday in Rio Grande City, a community of about 14,000 people along the Mexico border, after a Starr County grand jury indicted her on March 30 for murder for causing the death of a fetus or embryo through a self-induced abortion.
Texas DA says murder charge in abortion case will be dropped (msn.com)

229th District Attorney Gocha Allen Ramirez

3 h ·

Yesterday afternoon, I reached out to counsel for Ms. Lizelle Herrera to advise him that my office will be filing a motion dismissing the indictment against Ms. Herrera Monday, April 11, 2022. In reviewing applicable Texas law, it is clear that Ms. Herrera cannot and should not be prosecuted for the allegation against her.

In reviewing this case, it is clear that the Starr County Sheriff’s Department did their duty in investigating the incident brought to their attention by the reporting hospital. To ignore the incident would have been a dereliction of their duty. Prosecutorial discretion rests with the District Attorney’s office, and in the State of Texas a prosecutor’s oath is to do justice. Following that oath, the only correct outcome to this matter is to immediately dismiss the indictment against Ms. Herrera.

Although with this dismissal Ms. Herrera will not face prosecution for this incident, it is clear to me that the events leading up to this indictment have taken a toll on Ms. Herrera and her family. To ignore this fact would be shortsighted. The issues surrounding this matter are clearly contentious, however based on Texas law and the facts presented, it is not a criminal matter.

guess it got too hot in the kitchen
We need more info about this injustice, but I can’t imagine a scenario that doesn’t include illegal and unethical behavior from every person involved in her arrest.

There is no law in Texas that criminalizes the person self-inducing an abortion.

Section 19.06, paragraph 1 of the Texas Penal code specifically exempts the killing of an unborn baby by the mother from prosecution. This was law enforcement apparently not knowing the law.

Look, *every one of the J6 committee is an elected member of Congress
How could it not be political already?
C’mon folks
… … … …
Earlier Sunday, the New York Times reported that leaders of the committee are divided over making a criminal referral of Trump to the Justice Department, despite the panel having concluded that it has enough evidence to proceed with the referral. Some members of the committee are reportedly concerned that such a referral could potentially politicize the Justice Department’s investigation into Jan. 6.
… … … … …
Send the evidence to the DoJ and let them sit on it until it hatches something…
Quit the whining about this being “politicized” cuz it already is.

This is long overdue.

Posters and writers (on Twtter and press outlets) are recognizing that, in addition to the voter suppression, obsruction and outright cheating that the GOP will physically endeavor to do, they will also seek to portray a public narrative that GOP victory of both houses of Congress is so inevitable as to make voting for Democrats either useless or an afterthought.

I intend to do mail in ballots. That’s plural because we have city elections coming up in May and a primary in August and then more in November. I will be hand carrying my ballots to the proper offices. I did that in 2020 and I liked the process.
Then again our city elections are completely mail in ballots. Here in AZ mail in is a very popular way of voting and has been well before trump or the pandemic came along.

One other thing about the GOP:

They have no shame…with regard to themselves, their minions, their voters. So trying to foment outrage, while useful in many occasions, should not be looked at as a cure-all.

There was a film called The Great Santini in which visiting American pilots trashed and otherwise spoiled a restaurant in which the (not US) customers were mortified.

…which then invigorated the pilots to damage the place further.

The GOP wants the pilots.

Because Hillary’s not running for anything right now, so they have to cast about for something else to dark-cloud about.

Too bad the press isn’t recognizing that its reporting of the narrative is creating a self fulfilling prophecy. Oh, maybe it does?

So, no matter how pervasive and compelling the evidence that Trump committed serious crimes, he must not be prosecuted lest it be seen as, if not actually be, politicized? So basically, folks are falling for his trap? I they this stupid, or just gutless and hoping it just blows over. Like that 1924 Beer Hall Putsch by that weirdo no one ever heard from again. whatisname, Adolf something or other? And yes, it’s EXACTLY the same fucking thing. It always is. In 1924 the Nazis were a joke. In 1933 they were for real. In 1945 tens of millions of people were dead. Do the math. History doesn’t have to repeat itself in exactly the same way for it to be deadly, but it’s uncanny how similar these scenarios are.

And yes, I realize that the reporting on this might be for shit. But there are definitely elements in the Democratic party who think this way, whether out of political or even personal cowardice or because they’re compromised.

As I said here or elsewhere, everybody involved in this is or was elected so how can it be other than politicized? The committee needs to go ahead and submit the evidence to the DoJ or this whole thing is a fucking stupid waste of time charade. If they have concrete indisputable evidence then submit it. Or say trump is invulnerable to any law ever anywhere, Hand him a gun and line up on 5th ave.
edit to add

I am very biased against trump so I would be a really shitty juror. I count trump with Vlad Putin. He is that bad a person.

DA [stet] is filing for dismissal. As you say, there’s no law against this

ETA: I see now you included the dismissal. Missed that on first read

Because Hillary’s not running for anything right now, so they have to cast about for something else to dark-cloud about.

That’s what kills me. It’s not like there’s no political scandals to cover. There’s tons of Republican/Trump family scandals with new developments every week. Hell, the oligarch yacht confiscation beat alone should be juicy enough for multiple front pages. But no, they’ve got to rag on Biden and his family. It’s so irritating.

I meant DoJ, which is appointed, not elected, but by elected officials, so, duh, obviously politics plays a role. Let’s all agree that it does and just do what needs to be done. Funny how no one cares if the prosecution of regular people looks political.
