No no no, taking her stance against the Big Trump Lie (let’s give “credit” where it’s due) is courageous. A much easier path of go-along-to-get-along was certainly open to her, after all.
But like @seamus42 said, being courageous is not at all the same as being virtuous across the board. This isn’t a cheap novel, where all the Good Guys are brave and noble and good-looking and you know right away who the Baddies are, because they’re scowling, physically deformed, and badly dressed.
Agree with everything you say. The Cheney interview was an important level set for Democrats and Independents. Nevertheless, she has been both courageous and - we shall see - politically savvy in combatting “the big lie”. I don’t see why we can’t recognize both things.
Of course, this duplicity is part of the reason she is out on her ass…she is craven…just not craven enough for the GQP group in Congress currently humiliating themselves in DC…
After twice as many people died from COVID in one year than combat deaths in WWII, I would say that we have a number of determined people in this country willing to accept anything the GOP says.
There are more of us.
But if Cheney still wishes to be an active member of the Republican Partry she still has to appeal to the former…
Representative Chaney has not been, is not, and is unlikely to ever be a “moderate” politician. Independent of her actions in recent weeks, she does not hold positions and views that would qualify her to be a role model for good governance for all in this nation. The Republican Party has had its veneer stripped away and we all now plainly see the corrupt efforts to remain in power at all costs either by passing laws to limit/role back voting rights or skewing the census, etc. There are times where I may agree with a political opponent on a single issue, but let’s all stop attempting to rehabilitate an individual with abhorrent views based on one action where we agree. Let’s work together when we can, but be careful and alert - she has her own agenda and it does not involve honesty.
Of course the Democrats are to blame! They never warned the Republicans that everybody would be able to take advantage of the changes, not just the deserving White Republicans.
The thing is…the voter suppression bills she’s hesitant to criticize will give us more Trumpers and less of the kind of Republicans Cheney wants. She should fight that battle first, before fighting Democrats.
I know she doesn’t care a whit about democracy, so I’m not even wasting time trying to reach her on that level.
I am impressed with Biden’s ability to stay under the wire and avoid being a moving target for the Opposition.
A lot of that has to do with the hard work that he is doing, but I suspect that isn’t all of it.
In a way, it’s sort of a test on (1) our ability to place in perspective the histrionics of the Right, which has an audience of emotion junkies to satisfy, (2) our not getting caught up on equating this noise with strength and (3) our being able to appreciate what Biden is doing and the ways in which he has to go about it.
I guess when one of them goes out of his or her way to be honest and forthright about something in a way people like us can agree with, it doesn’t mean that person woke up one day as a Democrat. It’s pretty much just that one thing.
