The Census Bureau announced Wednesday that it was suspending until April 1 the field operations involved in the 2020 decennial census, citing the need “protect the health and safety of the American public, Census Bureau employees, and everyone going through the hiring process for temporary census taker positions.”
Look, I don’t trust Trump or his band of crooks. But this was a predictable and probably necessary step. I would have preferred the Census to issue gloves and masks to everyone, and go one, but Trump has fucked up so badly that gloves and masks are not available, nor other protective gear.
Yeah, Wilbur, we believe this is due to the virus and not a desire not to count the growing number of people of color in the country. After all, you’ve built up a huge reservoir of trust with the citizenry regarding the sanctity of the census process and results.
Snark aside, there may be legitimate reasons to suspend field operations for awhile; it’s hard enough to get in-person responses without having to deal with COVID-19 fears I both census-takers and respondents. But this administration is so untrustworthy and so eager to take political advantage of any situation, everything they do must be viewed very critically.
The online version asked for race/heritage. I answered White/Hispanic. Wondered if the submit would fail. Don’t think it did and I was able to get a printed copy of my submissions. Having that should allow for any undercount to be audited.
They need to suspend for a year, if not a year and a half. Census takers will be risking their lives – and many census workers are older, often retired. Not worth it.
