Census Director Can’t Say Whether Data Is Being Collected To Boost GOP Electorally | Talking Points Memo

Census Bureau Director Steven Dillingham couldn’t say on Wednesday whether the citizenship data his agency is helping to collect will be used to drastically change the way political power is doled out across the country to favor the Republican Party.

For time eternal politics has been characterized as “a dirty business.” Trump, his administration and his supporters, have taken that dirtiness to a wholly new level to the point where “the game” of party and narrow political and/or personal interests have taken over fidelity to country, the national interest, and the formation of a more perfect union. Politics is now rotten, corrupt, unethical, unpatriotic, of dubious or real illegality. The United States is no longer “united.”

“Let me get you back to you on that,” Dillingham said Wednesday, while declining to saying whether citizenship should be used in that count. “I just need to know the mechanics, congresswoman, and I will get back to you on that.”

Don’t hang by the neck, waiting, Congresswoman…

@sickneffintired, points for the John Oliver reference.

Can’t or Won’t? Next question: Who ordered you not to respond? Dillingham: Can’t answer that.

EO, my ass.

Pressley asked him to confirm that the citizenship data collected would not be used in the Census Bureau’s apportionment count ….

“Let me get you back to you on that,” Dillingham said.

IOW: Yes. As in indubitably.

Fify.

The short answer to Pressley’s question is “yes.” Why not just say so?

The Constitution is clear - all people are to be counted for apportionment and electors no matter citizenship status.

The answer is, “Yes, ma’am, we’re already doing everything that Trump ordered us to do, we just haven’t had a chance to write out a formal policy. So I’ll get back to you when we do.”

Barr is a FASCIST!!!

GOP reply: “We’re cheating and we don’t care. We have counted on the apathy of the public and it’s always come through for us.”

Didn’t it use to be a crime to provide false or misleading information to congress?

On Wednesday, Pressley asked Dillingham several questions related to the order. Dillingham repeatedly struggled to respond and appeared altogether unprepared to answer basic questions about the Census Bureau’s plans in following Trump’s directive.

Which is less surprising? Pressley’s performance or Dillingham’s?

I take your point but, frankly, I think Trump’s regime is about as bad as Dick Cheney’s was.

Yeah, I noticed that. Aside from the outright cruelty and hideousness of the decision, the timing was… interesting, coming as it did the day after Mueller’s testimony. And just like that – shiny object! And the media moves on…

Well, that’s weird. Because I sure can.
