Singapore was very successful, and stopped using masks very early on because they are ineffective. It was testing, testing, testing, and extreme distancing, that made Singapore successful. Not masks.
How about Trump Halloween masks? Will they work?

At least in NJ, theyâve said in the strongest terms that people who are asymptomatic should not get tested. Partly because thereâs a limited number of test kits. But either way, the advice is the same: âStay the fuck at home.â
I donât know the best way to handle a grocery run. If I could get us some TP, hand sanitizer and handiwipes Iâd feel somewhat better.
I personally think that this is just something foisted on the CDC by tRump to give people a false sense of security as a prelude to prematurely re-opening the economy. Distancing and vigilant hand washing/sanitization are the only things that are going to work. Since we will never get enough tests to do what should have been done since the end of JanuaryâŚtest, test, test!
If N95 masks are ineffective, why do doctors and nurses need them?
In point of fact, when worn correctly, they do offer a level of protection for the wearer, even though they are not proof against the virus. I happened to have an N95 that I bought a couple years ago for some dusty work I was going to do. I hadnât opened it, but I now have.
Also, masks can be used for longer than their specified life (8 hours for an N95). This video has suggestions to decontaminate masks for reuse. (Skip to the 13 minute mark.)
It will keep it from blowing away in the windâŚ
Plain, truthful information and education is exactly what the public needs. Not PR bullshit from either tRump or his proxies like that MyPillow guy. And donât tell me to pray or read the Bible. I have enough fiction on the side of my bed to last me a lifetime.
If a tested positive person self-quarantines, thatâs a big plus. But almost everybody I know has already self-quarantinedâof course, I know Central Jersey, I donât know about anywhere else.
He ainât gonna win this war. This pandemic is gonna whoop his ass, and heâll be grateful when he loses this November. Only then will he be able to absolve himself of any responsibility.
Do they still accept payment in cash, or only debit and credit cards?
Here is an example of wishful thinking times two.
A simple cloth barrier does nothing to block something as small as a virus from entering air passageways. It has the same effect as a security blanket. Oh, but it does discourage people from touching their face, which is the main cause of introducing this virus to a new host.
Bible reading? I guess itâs worth a laugh.
Thanks the info about Singapore, which I didnât know before. However, the lack of testings (at least for a short time) is real and experts shouldâve seen that coming. Without any effort to provide more testings in Feb., it was irresponsible to recommend against wearing masks.
Same in Michigan. Weâre currently on the upswing for infection rates, especially on the east side of the state in the metro-Detroit area but its just a hop, skip and jump before it transfers over to the west side of the state. So now is the time for all of us here to stay put. I ventured out last Thursday. I posted about it the other day. It was an exercise in total neurosis. I came home and Lysoled everything and I donât plan on going out for anything besides medicine (drive through pharmacy) for another 2 to 3 weeks.
Someone here said that the reason there still was no toilet paper and all the other hard to get items like sanitizer was because the grocery stores order those kinds of items by the month with a set amount, and it all sold out within a week. Their next order for April might go the same way. Hopefully, enough people got what they needed in March and can leave some of that stuff by not hoarding it so the rest of us can have some.
Reminds me of Elaine on Seinfeld: Can you spare a square?
While the CDC ponders their next decree, the situation on the aircraft carrier TR is dire. More failure by the Trump administration.
Several Finnish corporations have figured out a way to jump the testing line for their possibly symptomatic employees.
It turns out that even at 195 euros a pop at Finlandâs for-profit Meihiläinen medical group, you still need a doctorâs referral. Now, you can get several hundred employees tested at 249 euros a pop. Meihiläinen flies the samples to South Korea, which now has spare capacity as its coronavirus load has diminished. Win-win. Finnair has something to do, Korea has something to do, and Finland gets another 1,500 tested per planeload.
Agree about testing. But if people get a false sense of security wearing scarves, etc., that IS irresponsible. I think this is just a prelude to easing social distancing, which is also irresponsible.
Remember when the jokes wrote themselves with nearly everything the Dotard did after he was sworn in? Nothing he does is funny anymore. Heâs turned himself into a horror movie.
Hand washing, social distancing and staying at home are the most effective and anything that dissuades people from these practices is a disservice. Masks, gloves can only help if they are used as adjuncts to these practices.
While the material of a surgical mask will effectively block viruses, because of the fit they are considered only 70% effective in blocking infection of the wearer. They are designed to protect the patient from the doctor.
Doubled 100% cotton can be 70% effective in blocking virus penetration through the material and a DIY mask could be 50% effective when fit is considered. This site has some interesting info.
I came across a study that attempted to compare the protection from the flu of surgical masks vs N95s.
When they tested in the hospital with nurses wearing one or the other, the two groups got sick with the flu at about the same rate. In order to do the test with a control group the study was repeated with parents so they could have surgical masks/ N95s/ no masks. The results held. The masked groups performed about the same with the un-masked group getting sicker more often. They could not explain their results.
Hand washing and social distancing are the most effective and anything that dissuades people from these practices is a disservice. With that in mind, a DIY mask at 50% protection and keeping you from touching your face is not a bad addition to the equation.
If everyone would wear masks, then untested and non-symptomatic people would be protecting those around them.
If we have to reserve masks for those on the front lines of this illness do to lack of supply those are the sad facts. We would all be safer with more masks in the equation.
I suppose thatâll be a great time to proselytize to those people too. When theyâre at their mercy and unable to tell them to shut the fuck up or walk away from them. Letâs hope they donât try to do secret conversions while theyâre at it. Keep the fundies out! Let the medical people do their job without their interference.
Maybe we will all start wearing burkas?
