Fox News’ Tucker Carlson announced that he is leaving for vacation Wednesday, after his comments about white supremacy being a “hoax” set off a firestorm and garnered the endorsement of David Duke, former leader of the Ku Klux Klan.
Maybe a vacation is needed - some time for reflection, a bit of self-awareness. Some time for Tucker to take a long hard look at that Tweet, and think “My God. What have I become?”
Tuck did this LAST year…started some garbage, got massive pushback, announced vacation, FOX rushed in to assure it was ALWAYS planned and then played clean up for the next couple of weeks. I believe Laura did the same thing…SUCH ‘fine’ people they are.
When the host makes a special effort to announce on-air his midweek departure to go on vacation, emphasizing how he’s going to spend time with his children… you know this wasn’t something “planned months in advance”.
Shorter White terrorists: We are not seeking to oppress any race. We just want to kill as many brown people as we can find. Doesn’t matter if their families have been Americans longer than ours have, whether they are visitng Mexican citizens or refugees legally entitled to haven under American law or desperate migrants fleeing dire economic straits.
Last night’s commentary had this obviously scripted screed:
"And if you’re allowed to think about that for long enough, you might start to get unauthorized ideas about economics, and that would be disruptive to a very lucrative status quo. "
So, are we supposed to buy that EVERY time one of these foxtools says something reprehensible, their following vacation is pre-planned? What, do the network honchos have an egg-timer that goes DING and says “It’s Early August! Tucker is due to go off the deep end into the Klan pool and will need a break ” ???
Actually, that’s doesn’t sound too crazy on second thought.
I am quite pleasantly surprised that Fox reacted that quickly to Tucker getting support from David Duke. It had appeared to me that Tucker was the vanguard of the Trump response to the accusations of white nationalism. But that ended rather quickly with the association of David Duke.
America really operates in 3 gears on social issues. Some are ahead of the curve. Some are aware where the curve is headed and adjust. Some are always behind the curve and are generally ignorant of where things are going. The transition on gay rights in this country is a pretty good example of how it works.
On this one, while a lot of us on this site say ‘duh, of course he’s a white nationalist. we knew this in 2015/16?!’ a lot of other Americans didn’t view it that way. There’s a difference between being ‘politically incorrect’, where one may joke about race or racial disparities in a manner that does not carry social opprobrium, and being an outright racist who supports views that would lead to harm to minorities. For a lot of Americans, especially older, white and Christian Americans, this is their first realization that Trump is a racist and not in an Archie Bunker, Grandpa Ranty like way. They’re ok with racist grandpa ranting in the living room. They’re not as ok with getting tagged or associated with the same views or beliefs.
The constant pounding by Dems like Beto, Harris and others that Trump’s rhetoric did inspire killers to attack minorities is breaking through. The results of ICE crackdowns leave a lot of people wanting. Those are better trends in white America. We still have to deal with the fact that Dems will be glad to lose the white vote by 14 points. You can’t make up that gap without a big turnout and margins among minority voters. Few of our campaigns are actually emphasizing this point.
