Candidates Prepare Alternate Events Amid Cancellation Of Second Presidential Debate | Talking Points Memo

The second presidential debate has been canceled, after President Donald Trump refused to participate in a modified virtual debate announced by the Commission on Presidential Debates earlier this week to ensure the safety of both candidates amid the President’s ongoing recovery from COVID-19.

NBC should host Trump’s simultaneous alternative event – and then delay broadcast until … I don’t know … November 4?

It’s really quite stunning that they won’t (or more likely, can’t) produce a negative test. They are simply lying about his illness and his contagion. Good for Vice President Biden for refusing to be in the same room with him. Will this continue on October 22nd? We’ll have to wait and see.

Good News,to start the day.

On PBS, Mark Shields and even the faux-profound GOP apologist David Brooks agreed that for Trump to skip out on the debate is practical evidence of insanity. A candidate who is running behind wants EVERY opportunity to debate in front of 70 million voters. Whereas the candidate who is ahead wants to nurse his lead, and would tend to want to avoid a forum where gaffes could occur and damage his lead.

But Trump prefers the FOX “News” (sic) audience of 3 million to 70 million, because it’s adulatory.

President Trump has not yet confirmed that he has received a negative test for coronavirus

Why does he have to produce a negative test after he has already told us that “We have a cure. More than just a therapeutic, we have a cure.”? We know that is not idle talk because one of his genius sons confirmed that Trump was just on one of the vaccines we will have before the election and “It knocked it out in 24 hours.” If you can’t trust your favorite president, who can you trust?

“There’s nothing that says that President Trump and Joe Biden can’t debate together without the overlords at the commission having a say in the matter. We would be glad to debate one-on-one without the commission’s interference,” campaign communications director Tim Murtaugh said in a statement.

First of all Timmy the Commission on Presidential debates gets to set the rules, and second your boy can’t handle questions from the public, a public that hasn’t been pre-screened.

“It’s shameful that Donald Trump ducked the only debate in which the voters get to ask the questions — but it’s no surprise. Everyone knows that Donald Trump likes to bully reporters, but obviously he doesn’t have the guts to answer for his record to voters at the same time as Vice President Biden,” Andrew Bates a Biden campaign spokesman said in a statement Friday.

Looks like Trump can’t handle the non sycophants.

What’s even more stunning is the depth of the hole he is digging for himself. It obviously would NEVER occur to the man to say/do something constructive, positive, or consoling. Rather than just wear a goddamn mask and be somewhat rational, they’re going to release Hillary’s emails.

It’s great that T-boy would like to just ride on that boost he got from his stellar performance in that first debate…

More good news. A pro-Biden parade in the Villages. He is losing seniors.

I am hoping that there will be no debate on the 22nd either. Joe doesn’t need another one, and Trump isn’t worth the time. He needs to have his narcissistic supply cut off.

@leftcoaster I love the Republicans for Biden sign in the photo!

Why so much confusion and desperation from Trump as November 3rd approaches.

Brooks must have talked that day to his Republican-operative buddies, who were mystified by Trump’s action in confining himself to speaking to the already-converted stormtroopers.

OTOH, we’re FINALLY starting to see evidence that down-ballot GOP candidates are starting to position themselves at some distance from Trump, though not TOO far (so as not to piss off Trump’s base of inflammatory dolts). So GOP candidates are probably secretly relived that Trump is NOT debating. E.g., he might say something that could lose a few more percent of votes from the Holly Rollers by saying he’s a greater divinity than Jesus Christ, who was just a fag wuss.

It should continue for the rest of donbald’s life. Same deal post-election, assuming Biden victory. No in person transition meetings; what’s the point? He’s an idiot, and a dangerous one.

That is good news. About time those Texas Republicans were told no. They are so use to getting away with their cheating they depend on it to get them elected and keep them in office.

Let’s take Texas. :star_struck:
