California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed a tax transparency bill on Tuesday that will require presidential and gubernatorial candidates to disclose their tax returns in order to appear on the state’s primary ballot.

I can already hear the feet stamping and claims he doesn’t care about California

No doubt Trump will sue over this, in the 9th Circuit yet.

This could make the GOP primary much more interesting…

Can’t wait to see how Trump retaliates.

But doesn’t this give Shithead the opportunity to claim, falsely of course, that he would have gotten eleventy bazillion votes in CA if not for being left off the ballot by 13 angry Democrats?

He’s gonna be so much worse after he’s ousted on Jan 20, 2021.

I am speechless…but not posting-less:

Let me give those Californians a hand…

We need to be cognizant that this isn’t just for Trump.

It’s for any heinous candidate of any party that would try to hoodwink the American people ever again. Don’t give Trump the courtesy of, yet again, thinking this is all about him.

Could be…that’s why he should release all of his returns (State and Federal) Yesterday

Good. Repubs like McConnell want to make states entirely responsible for managing their elections…let’s see his hypocrisy when it comes to this topic.

Oh, and we need a purple state or two to step up.

Primary ballot only, not the actual election ballot. CA has been irrelevant to the republican presidential primary since Reagan’s first term. That may change with CA being moved up in the calendar, but given that no republican will take CA’s electoral votes in the foreseeable future, I expect there will be a gentlemen’s agreement that none of the republican candidates will comply. This could result in a very tedious effort to tally millions of write-in votes.

So if I’m reading this correctly this is only for the primary? So as long as Trump’s not primaried and then it being close, this doesn’t matter or do anything? Why not make it the regular presidential ballot and not just the primary?

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Category 4 tantrum incoming…

Not that it really matters though I suppose…it’s not like he was getting those electoral votes anyway lol

But for the primary haha. He’s going to run this right up to Mommy Court so the Fascist Five can make it all better.

Because they can’t. States have wide leeway in how they may conduct their primary (and state office) elections, but they can’t fuck with the national elections (unless you’re the TX or FL Secretary of State throwing tens of thousands of voters off the registration rolls).

If this survives the court challenges, will it be weaponized by right wing states?

This isn’t necessarily directed squarely at Trump, but more of a move to avoid future Trumps.

It could also goose Bill Weld’s delegate total so instead of being completely hapless, he could only be moderately hapless.

How? Our candidates disclose their tax returns gladly. If they want to try to come up with something they think our candidates won’t do but that they consider important…maybe burn a cross or scream the n-bomb while drunk on Schlitz during backyard wrestling…then let 'em.

I’m looking forward to their moans of how wicked it is to demand transparency of our elected officials.

Ah ok. I thought states still had a little leeway there. Thanks for the info.
