SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California will outlaw sales of new gasoline-powered passenger cars and trucks by 2035, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday, a move he says will cut greenhouse gas emissions by 35% in the nation’s most populous state.
This is absolutely necessary to mitigate climate heating effects…without moving off of oil-powered cars we won’t slow the increase in greenhouse gas emissions and rising global temperatures. It will be relentlessly attacked by the usual suspects, but in the end history will deem them the causes of a far harsher world than there would have been if people had only done something about emissions early, when there was a real chance to stop the effects that are already baked into the system (and which will be worse than what we are already experiencing no matter what is done now).
Seriously, we need better batteries. I want to be able to drive across the continental US while stopping only for a refuel that takes as long as filling a gas tank. What if I have a team of good drivers who take shifts and effectively run non-stop except for refueling? We need better batteries. We’ll eventually get that technology and what California is doing is pushing us towards that goal.
Bullshit.
The Conversation is a liberal publication. That 18% figure near the end is generous because they used a generous yardstick according to real numbers.
But California is welcome to their leadership. As long they stay in California and don’t have national aspirations.
Do you have any clue how much fossil fuels are used in making an EV. Their environmental impact?
Don’t even start on recycling because it takes many tankers full of corrosive acid to separate the lithium and other materials. Then it costs 7 times as much to recover the lithium than to mine it. Using heat to recycle, they will burn the lithium up. They will never be fully recycled. Those batteries will be processed and buried. Hopefully, they will be buried in California. They haven’t got that much groundwater left down there anyway.
No kidding. Not just better in terms of performance but in use of toxic metals and lifespan/disposal issues. Maybe hydrogen is a better answer for the long term.
We bought a new car this year, the first new one in a long time. We passed on getting an all-electric car not just for the range problem, but the limited lifespan of the batteries. This is probably the last car we’ll ever own at our advancing age, and we plan to drive it into the ground, not trade it in 2 years.
The fad for leasing new cars and SUVs and turning them over every 2 years causes a not insignificant amount of environmental damage, and it’s even worse when it’s an all-electric or hybrid vehicle.
The “Roll-Coal on Libtards” groups will howl about this.
Their ROPOS Diesel Pickups are not only bad for everyone’s health, they are a danger on the road too as they never meet the bumper-height or headlight/taillight requirements.
Fuck Them Sideways.
“The littlest boys need the biggest toys to compensate.”
My first thought. This could have waited 41 + 1 days. Trump can scream that they want to take away your beautiful, powerful cars, and he’ll be telling the damn truth for once.
I wonder if Newsom realizes that this is one of the reasons anyone with an IQ higher than a rock is leaving the state, most for states not run by crazy liberals? Sad!
Tesla’s data shows that even cars they sold 10 years ago still have over 80% life left in them.
That is why they take back the batteries and use them in their Powerwalls.
“Limited Lifespan” of BEV batteries is a myth. These are not Lead-Acid (or even the Prius’ NiCad) batteries of old. They will last well over 100,000 miles, and still work just fine.
Show me an ICE engine that can claim that without major reconstruction and retrofit (Rings, Valves, Cams, etc.)
If a person drives mega miles a day, an EV is good choice. If you drive a lot for Uber or lyft. go ahead, buy one. If you don’t drive anymore than 10,000 miles a year, you’re not saving that much environment wise.
ICE cars are over 90% recycled. Fluids, metal and tires. Lead batteries are 100% recycled. Steel is recycled and used in new cars. Steel can be recycled over and over without quality issues. That’s why we’ll never see high iron ore prices again.
Mining is hard on the environment and a lot of coal is used in in the process from ground to smelters in the countries they do the most mining.
Exactly. Shaking my head over this one. Absolute self-own. You encourage behaviors like purchases through different incentives, telling everyone they have to buy a product that isn’t ready for primetime (and electric vehicles are still a niche product with a long ways to go) is a guaranteed turnoff.
And it beautifully feeds the broader argument that those crazy radical Dems want to ban everything you like. I understand how they feel, with damn near the whole state on fire for a while there, but the timing, ai yi yi.
