What is the method of succession? Obviously he’s not Prime Ministering so who is the head of the government? If he neglects to survive, who is his replacement until what I assume will be another election?

The herd wishes the prime minister a full recovery.

Where’s his hydroxychloroquine and Z-pak?

So, what are his chances for a recovery?

In the short term Bojo named Dominic Raab as his deputy before he went into ICU.

Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab, way way worse than Johnson…a little Trump let’s say

short answer: probably high.
long answer: very much depends upon other conditions he might have… he’s young enough that he’s not in the extremely sketchy cohort based upon age alone. having said that, if he is in the ICU, he’s veering towards a worse outcome but it’s far too early to jump to conclusions.

Though you wouldn’t know it from the hair, Boris Johnson is a human being and I wish him comfort during his convalescence and a swift and complete recovery.

This is the area where it just seems like patients are teetering on the edge - some hang on by a thread until a bit of clearing up begins to make breathing a bit more possible - some get over taxed and tip over to the non-recoverable side. The why is unclear.

I like your phraseology. I may use this in the future. I promise not to neglect to make you proud.

Well, now, do you have to go all negative on us? Recovery, pfft!

There is recovery and then there is recovery. Will he likely live through this? Probably as pointed out above. But what is his long term health going to be like. People are being damaged by this, not all of them get hit badly, recover and stomp about as if nothing happened.

I’m not wishing you dead, Boris. I’m simply moved by life’s little and big ironies.
I’ve outlived many contemporaries and should be reconciled with death. I don’t think I’m there yet, but I’m working on it – just in case.

If the PM dies suddenly, there is no UK Prime Minister until one is appointed by the Queen. In the meantime, the Civil Contingencies Act (2004) gives the Monarch (in practice, government ministers) powers to make emergency regulations, and COBRA meetings can be chaired by any Cabinet minister - after 9/11, these were chaired by the Cabinet Secretary until the PM could attend himself.

The Queen will appoint as PM the person most likely to command the confidence of the House of Commons. In practice, this is the person chosen as the leader of the party with the most MPs - in this case, the party that the deceased PM previously led. How this is chosen, and how quickly, will depend on the party in question, although in these circumstances it seems likely that an interim leader would be speedily chosen.

In the case of Johnson’s Conservative Party, the following rules apply:

  1. Upon the initiation of an election for the Leader, it shall be the duty of the 1922 Committee to present to the Party, as soon as reasonably practicable, a choice of candidates for election as Leader. The rules for deciding the procedure by which the 1922 Committee selects candidates for submission for election shall be determined by the Executive Committee of the 1922 Committee after consultation of the Board.
  2. If there is only one candidate at the time laid down for the close of nominations, that candidate shall be declared Leader of the Party.

Well, in the home of Charles Dickens …
maybe Boris will be visited by 3 ghosts -
and emerge a changed man …
