A Maryland man/Self-Own Hall of Famer who was arrested for allegedly breaking into the Capitol on Jan. 6 also allegedly posted a Snapchat map that pinpointed his location at the scene — complete with a cartoon bitmoji version of himself.
He doesn’t look middle aged to me. He looks like a young punk who grew up negatively immersed in a virtual world that is detached from reality. This was not a “boomer” event as some have suggested.
Some of the shock troops looked to be in their forties and fifties, enough that it struck you, but that would only involve the absolute tail-end boomers, born in '64. You’ve put your finger on the entirely unselfconscious nature of it, though. How in the hell they could imagine they could smash their way into this building, of all buildings, without realizing they were committing multiple crimes in a place bristling with cameras and circuitry that could identify everyone’s phone, how they could post selfies and videos as if they were on spring break, it remains mind-boggling. They really did seem to have very little awareness of how others might see this escapade. “The bubble” might not be a perfect metaphor for something so durably hermetic.
All of this behavior makes sense if you consider the fact that many of these people really, truly believe that they are the heroes trying to save the world from those lawless, treacherous Democrats. Yes, they’ve been brainwashed, but that’s the real problem. It’s possible to brainwash just about anyone and, if you think you’re immune just because you saw through all of this idiocy, think again.
One of the most important lessons that I think is being overlooked about the Trump era is not why so many idiots fell for him, but rather why so many seemingly reasonable people also got roped into this foolishness. It’s a bit terrifying to think of how susceptible everyone really is to being brainwashed. You merely have to find which buttons to push on a person and, once you have, you can lead just about anyone down the road to the most insane beliefs and actions.
If you didn’t fall for this set of bullshit, it’s because yours weren’t the buttons being pushed this time. In truth, though, that was far more a matter of luck than anything else. Only a fool truly believes that they’re too smart to be scammed.
