RIO DE JANEIRO — President Jair Bolsonaro is sticking with his contention that concern about the new coronavirus is overblown, and has accused Brazilian media of trying to stoke nationwide hysteria.
Boris Johnson and Narendra Modi are two leaders from the right with huge majorities in their countries. They both started out downplaying the Corona Virus and then flipped on a dime.
I think the examples of those two leaders undercuts the right’s propaganda that this is a HO-AX or no worse than the flu. It shows the difference between the right and kook right.
Trumpp’s puppet master went for the full hazmat gear.
Edited to add: He also has postponed the late-April vote in which Russians were invited to cast almost-secret ballots to say that they approved of the already completed constitutional amendments allowing Putin to hold power into 2036.
Both of them elected. Both of them with their faults and unsuitability well known before the first vote was cast. Both full of shit wanna-be’s, petty demagogues and poseur populist.
Hard to feel sorry for “the country of the future and it always will be” or “the exceptional nation”.
Brazil had the opportunity to elect a proven leader and a man that turned much of the country around. Instead they fell for an asshole that trumped up a corruption case against that good man paving the way for himself. Bolsonaro made his platform all about the elimination corruption and crime in Brazil, the equivalent of eliminating the cold at the North Pole, and the Brazilians bought it. Bolsonaro is not what’s screwing the Brazilian people. He’s the screw. The people are the ones turning it.
I know. I had a girl friend in João Pessoa years ago and I loved the place. But Bolsonaro, like Trump got his power from his people. It rests with them.
Bolsonaro said in a nationally televised address that the media had seized on the death toll in Italy, which he said is suffering so severely because of its elderly population and colder climate.
Approval of Bolsonaro’s government fell to a record low this week, according to XP Investimentos poll released on Friday. Just 30 percent of those surveyed rated his administration “good” or “great”, compared with 36 percent calling it “bad” or “awful”.
Many Brazilians have been drumming pots and pans in their homes nightly in a traditional protest against Bolsonaro, who ignored medical advice to meet crowds of supporters on Sunday despite having several aides diagnosed with virus
Bolsonaro and Rio’s governor Witzel are directing the police to go on a rampage in the favelas in the name of eliminating drug trafficking.
police killings in the state of Rio de Janeiro reached a 20-year high last year, with 1,810 people murdered by security forces — almost five deaths per day. (Twenty-two police officers were killed in the same period.) Police forces are now responsible for 43 percent of all the violent deaths in the state, an astonishingly high number even by Brazilian standards.
He has a point about the climate. Covid-19 does not do well in very warm and humid conditions. Add in sunshine and Brazil has really lucked out. Heat alone does nothing, but add in humidity and sunshine and Brazil has an advantage. Of course, even a moron can ruin what should be an advantage in climate by ignoring the dangers.
Brazil really made progress under Lulu. He was also helped by high commodity prices. Dilma was victim of a right-wing coup. She did her herself no favors with her leadership. Uninspiring for a woman who was supposed to be an economist.
