Brazilian Authorities Will Revive Santos Fraud Case After Not Knowing His Whereabouts For 14 Years

As he’s sworn-in as a lawmaker Tuesday, Representative-elect George Santos (R-NY) will have the attention of international authorities: Brazilian law enforcement has been searching for the incoming congressman for years with an embezzlement charge. They intend to revive the case after he’s sworn-in with a formal request to the DOJ, the New York Times reported.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://talkingpointsmemo.com/?p=1443760

You’d think the newly - and mysteriously - wealthy Mr. Santos would cough up the $700 to try to resolve these charges, wouldn’t you? Of course, that’s only if you believe that he’s actually wealthy.

The man is a common thief. The DoJ should extradite his sorry ass back to Brazil. It would be good practice for the next Brazilian bastard to darken our doors. The DoJ should be preparing to extradite Bolasaro back to Brazil as soon as President Lulu asks. We need to get rid of all these thugs at once.

Aside from the fraud of passing stolen checks, which is a crime that far exceeds the monetary amount of the crime, also remember that $700 in 2008 Brazil was a lot more than $700 in 2022 United States.

Why is there no discussion regarding his prior claims of both Brazilian and NYC births and apparent anchor marriage? Once upon a time, I thought the “Constitution” mentioned something about a House member’s qualifications for office.

Even with today’s chaos, the current House Majority has 222 members.

When did Santos’ mother die again?
I’m assuming that the elderly client of George’s mother wrote checks to pay bills, and thus putting an elderly gentleman in some financial difficulties.

IIRC, the checks the client wrote were to pay Mrs. Santos for her services as his caregiver. Then the client died. Mrs. Santos had the checks in her purse, and was going to return them to the bank, as she was not going to take advantage of the poor man she took care of. Her son thought differently about the “opportunity.”

So then it was George screwing his mother. How Republican of him.

If Santos is arrested and extradited to Brazil, will he keep his Congressional seat? Enquiring minds want to know.

Apparently whenever it was most convenient to Santos at the time.

Yeah. It seems that “where there is an opportunity, Santos will find a way.”

There are precedents in Congress for the expulsion of a seated member of the House for unlawful or ethics violations. Remember James Traficant of Ohio? He was a real nasty actor.

From Wiki:

In 2001, Traficant was indicted on federal corruption charges for taking campaign funds for personal use. Again, he opted to represent himself, insisting that the trial was part of a vendetta against him dating back to his 1983 trial. After a two-month federal trial, on April 11, 2002, he was convicted of ten felony counts including bribery, racketeering, and tax evasion.[1] Per longstanding House convention, House Democrats directed him not to cast any votes pending an investigation by the United States House Committee on Ethics.

Eventually, the House Ethics Committee recommended that Traficant be expelled from Congress. On July 24, the House voted to expel him in a 420-1 vote.[20] The sole vote against expulsion was Representative Gary Condit, who at the time was in the midst of a scandal of his own and had been defeated in his reelection primary.[21] Traficant was the first representative to be expelled since Michael Myers in 1980 as a result of the Abscam scandal.

At best, It would appear that the Ethics Committee could endorse barring Santos from casting any votes during the time he is being investigated by the Committee. But, since Santos is a GQP member, I think they would give him a pass.

In Brazil law, he can be tried in absentia. He doesn’t even have to leave the comfort of his “home” (wherever that is.)

Are we sure that Rep Myers wasn’t expelled because of this?

What really bothers me about this story is the a media narrative that it is all the fault of Democrats for not doing enough opposition research on Santos to know about his failings before he was elected.

Like that is what America needs to save democracy, more opposition research and negative ads.

Apparently a local LI newspaper did investigate Santos’ background. The NY major news media didn’t pick up, or run with the finding because they deemed Santos unelectable in that district, because he’s a Republican.

Usually performed in November but let’s quibble over the proper timing:

And I, I walked over to the, to the bench there, and there is, Group W’s
Where they put you if you may not be moral enough to join the army after
Committing your special crime, and there was all kinds of mean nasty ugly
Looking people on the bench there. Mother rapers. Father stabbers. Father
Rapers! Father rapers sitting right there on the bench next to me! And
They was mean and nasty and ugly and horrible crime-type guys sitting on the
Bench next to me. And the meanest, ugliest, nastiest one, the meanest
Father raper of them all, was coming over to me and he was mean ‘n’ ugly
‘N’ nasty ‘n’ horrible and all kind of things and he sat down next to me
And said, “Kid, whad’ya get?” I said, “I didn’t get nothing, I had to pay
$50 and pick up the garbage.” He said, “What were you arrested for, kid?”
And I said, “Littering.” And they all moved away from me on the bench
There, and the hairy eyeball and all kinds of mean nasty things, till I
Said, “And creating a nuisance.” And they all came back, shook my hand,
And we had a great time on the bench, talkin about crime, mother stabbing,
Father raping, all kinds of groovy things that we was talking about on the
Bench. And everything was fine, we was smoking cigarettes and all kinds of
Things, until the Sargeant came over, had some paper in his hand, held it
Up and said*.
