Like a guided missile, Trump headed for the Base and refused to Pivot (unlike McCain and Romney).
In addition, Trump was a gifted Demagogue for his audience. We had a chance to stop him in 2016 and, in my opinion, the Dem. 2016 Convention was where that effort got off to the worst start imaginable…
Made worse because a sizable number of Democrats underestimated Trump.

I would say the Democrats underestimated how regimented the Republican party was. How willing they were to “follow the leader” no matter how unhinged the leader was. Trump came out with his party edicts that “all children under 16 are now 16” and the Dems were shocked when the GOP accepted it without audible complaint.
