A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo.
In an important new court filing last evening, the House Jan. 6 committee alleged that President Trump committed crimes in pressuring Vice President Pence to overturn the result of the 2020 election.
Fox News host Tucker Carlson is demanding to see Jackson’s LSAT score so the Black lady can prove whether she really belongs on the Supreme Court.
Hmmm… wonder why that wasn’t a criterion for consideration with the last two confirmations?
Former Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro didn’t show up for his scheduled deposition with the House Jan. 6 committee yesterday, claiming that he is an Executive Privileged Boi who won’t let the committee “bully” him with its subpoena, no sir!
And what happens next will be crucial in the efforts going forward. Just because someone claims Exec privilege doesn’t mean it actually applies. Just words on his part, at this point. Can we start the chant ‘lock him up’ yet?
And the DeSantis thing has already gotten too much publicity, so why again?
Amen! Let the prime time hearings begin. I want the simple choice that voters have - either for or against authoritarian regimes. It’s like having Putin on the ballot in the US on election day, November 2022. Embrace or reject!
Putin’s immorality and folly should make the decision easy for US voters in 2022. The Putin-TFG partnership should have its public discussion time this year. All in favor of Putin, please stand in front of this concrete wall, so we can count you, please. MAGA should be shown as a massive bot fraud. If the MAGAtards still vote MAGA, then they’ll get the government the deserve. I say if they don’t like democracy, they can get the hell out!
I want TFG’s criminality in the news every dang day until the hearings.
What a blessing that the rank Kevvie McCarthy was unable to disrupt the important business of the committee with clowns like Jordan, Green, Boebert, et al. Actually what I mean to say is thank you, madam speaker!
“More than a year after the near-coup, with no public sign that the Justice Department is investigating the higher-ups in the conspiracy to subvert the 2020 election, the Jan. 6 committee is laying down an important marker for judging the performance of Attorney General Merrick Garland. Is he up to it?”
The U.S. is not bringing charges and forcing to trial an ex-President little more than one year removed from office. Is not happening.
A note on the Jan 6 Select Committee’s filing re Eastman: They’re just giving the judge reasons Eastman’s privilege claims are bullshit and saying can we get on with discovery already. It is not a criminal referral to DoJ, let alone an indictment.
Now, one can infer that this is part of what a future criminal referral might look like, but that has not happened (yet). And yes, it is a somewhat big deal that they said to a judge that they believe Eastman conspired with the president to obstruct an official proceeding and to defraud the United States, but they have not made that statement in a form where the Department of Justice is required to act on it.
I am wondering at what point will Eastman’s lawyers use the absence of a DOJ investigation of crimes by Trump and Eastman as evidence that the January 6 committee investigation is largely political? Sure, DOJ criminal investigations are supposed to be secret until an indictment is returned. However, Eastman’s lawyers can point to an absence of DOJ requests of documents or interviews with Eastman or his close associates as indicating that there is no active investigation.
