Bogus Russian News Story Shows How Election Disinfo Can ‘Hack Your Mind’ | Talking Points Memo

A quickly debunked Russian report on how U.S. voter roll data was supposedly making it to the “dark web” presented a perfect case study in the disinformation challenges election officials are facing, amid a voting season already in turmoil due to the pandemic.

This is how they run a disinformation campaign.

Plant a few impossible stories, a lot of possible (but false) stories, and a few correct, but taken wildly out of context stories, stir, and you get a populace so confused that they will believe ANYTHING (QAnon for example.) The lack of critical thinking skills gets amplified by your Sock-puppets and Bots to the point that nobody knows who said what or where stories come from.

“When you believe in nothing, you’ll fall for anything.”

Why would the Russian’s want to reinforce Trump’s claims of a rigged election? Does anyone have any ideas?

Stating the obvious here - lots of Russian trolls are out in droves to help Putin’s Orange BFF cheat his way to re-election!

What is disturbing is that Ratcliffe’s refused to brief Congress in-person, just in written format where in its is easy to loose nuances.

Moreover, you now have Coverup Trumpian AG Barr doing this

Barr tightens rules on surveillance of political candidates and advisers

Before seeking a FISA warrant on candidates, advisers, or elected officials, "officials must first consider warning that person that foreign governments may be targeting them"https://t.co/BI65gcO67d

Not a good way to catch those perps who welcomes, coordinates, colludes or conspires with foreign entities!

And more Russian trolls in FB:

The small network of 13 Facebook accounts and two pages posing as journalists and targeting left-wing progressives was removed for violating a policy against “foreign interference” at the platform.

I eagerly await our chance to get back at Putin. Hammer down, bigly and with brut force. Squash him like the insect he is.

Apologies to insects everywhere.

According to the report, the information includes “name, date of birth, gender, date of registration, address, postal code, e-mail, voter identification number and polling station number.” Per the Michigan SoS, some of this information is available, some is not. For example, e-mail addresses and month and day of birth are not publicly available, although they are on the database. https://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,4670,7-127-5647_12539_29836-88651--,00.html.

So IF the report is accurate, the information in the DarkWeb database is more extensive than what is publicly available. If so, that may suggest that someone was able to hack into the database. If they had adequate access to copy nonpublic information, could they have changed information? For example, the NYT reported that the Russians were in a position to change voter roll information in Florida. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/26/us/florida-russia-hacking-election.html . Also, https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/18/us/florida-russia-2016-election-hacking.html?searchResultPosition=2

So it isn’t just paranoia. And this is on the heels of the federal authorities refusing to provide in person briefings to Congress about election interference.

claiming that “hackers” had accessed and released the voter registration data of millions of Americans

They don’t need hackers to get voter data. Jared Kushner is willing to sell them whatever they want.

Because they know what everyone else already knows: Trump is going to lose in an electoral landslide.

Oh my goodness…the Russians are coming and we’re fucked. No. The way to counter disinformation is with information. MSM… the ball is in your court. Rather than report on this as some kind of “were fucked” situation just let people know that no…you are not fucked unless you let Putin fuck you. For Russia’s bullshit to work Americans have to let it work. They have to WANT it to work. The other option is to elect folks that will place severe sanctions on Russia.

Trump won’t.

Because Trump, his crony allies, his Russian Partners, and much of his Cabinet are systematically trying to completely disable the American system of government and create chaos . . .or so it seems.

Because they want Trump in the White House. ( he’s bad for America ) “Rigged election” is an excuse to keep him there if he loses. So they go that route. If Trump loses things change. Putin does NOT WANT that change.

Because if he wins, the Democrats get to scream about how he rigged it somehow. That’s more political turmoil. If he loses, the Republicans get to screw about how the deep state rigged it somehow. That’s more political turmoil.

Either way, they’re sowing discord and making a functional US government less possible while they continue to makes moves in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. It’s a win-win.
