And for admirers of the Lincoln Project, yeah those ads might have made you feel good, but they had one job, get “moderate” republicans to vote for Biden. And they blew it. Republicans showed up for Trump.
And for lefties who are still talking about appealing to the white working class, get your priorities straight. Free college isn’t going to bring them into the fold. White people need to be the ones doing the work of convincing the white working class that racism is a suckers’ game and they’re being played against their own interests.
In the meantime, if we want to say thanks, we should be focused on the issues that Black voters care about.
Yup. Their ads made lefties feel good, and were frequently entertaining. And they went for the throat in a way that Democrats rarely have the stomach for.
But they’re not our friends. When will that group turn on Biden? After certification, or after Inauguration?
At some point since Election Day, when the usual suspects were all falling into the trap they repeatedly were warned not to fall into, I had the distinct displeasure of hearing an MSNBC anchor pontificate about how Trump’s soon-to-prove-illusory lead over Biden in WI, MI, and PA showed how “Democrats are still the Whole Foods party, and haven’t learned to connect with working-class Americans” (or words to that effect).
Sadly, his guests (including a former Democratic senator whom, more often than not, I respect) took the bait – as if it were a perfectly-reasonable, self-evident premise – and comically opined about how there still were "lessons to be learned by the Democratic Party about letting go of ‘identity politics’ and focusing on economic issues” (again, not a direct quote).
I was livid, practically screaming (like some idiot who thinks the teevee people can hear him) about how women of color, working-class Americans, and minimum-wage earners have been the reliable backbone of the Democratic Party for years.
Alas, I guess I’m just more out of touch with The Average American than those multi-million-dollar paid commentators with $5000 shoes and cocktail-party anecdotes.
Amen to this. Black women have shown us the way on so many occasions; never failing to show up, and never failing to fight. We would, quite honestly, be screwed without them. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, ladies, and I very much look forward to seeing Vice President Harris in action!
My entire family, Democrats, Independents, and Republicans alike, voted for Biden-Harris this time. One cousin voted for a Democrat for the first time in his life. He didn’t vote at all in 2016, and lived to regret it. I’m proud of them.
As a white American man, I’m not sure we/America deserve them; but I feel so damn lucky that the black women of our country, not matter the difficulties put upon them, still believe in our country, still fight for our country.
I saw that whole thing and I had a similar reaction. It was the first time I had very negative thoughts about Claire McCaskill. Very disappointing. Not really sure what to make of it or what to say so I guess I’ll sign off, but I did just want to jump in and totally fucking agree with you.
That was you yelling through my TV? I was thinking about calling in an exorcist. And yeah, when I hear those guys buy into a bogus premise I scream too. (are you hearing me screaming through your teevee?)
Fellow white guy here, and I Totally agree with this. Just wanted to remind everyone of basketball coach Doc Rivers emotional interview where he talked about The black community loving a country that does not love it back. We owe the black community so so much. I think the least we can do is follow their lead as we right the ship that is America.
At a time when a fair portion of the country was reeling with despair and shock over all the gas-lighting and outright maliciousness, this was the voting block that was the most clear-headed, clear-sighted, competent and committed to getting the work done.
And we have all benefited immeasurably.
The words thank you are not enough. We are going to be working off this debt our whole lives.
