Black Man Suffocates After Police Put ‘Spit Hood’ Over His Head | Talking Points Memo

The man who suffocated after police in New York’s third-largest city put a “spit hood” over his head was the loving father of five adult children, had some mental health issues but was harmless, and had just arrived in Rochester for a visit with his brother, his aunt said.

We’re approaching the point where we have the “riot of the week” in this country. Every city gets a turn in the barrel.

The headline is a bit misleading. The cause of death was asphyxiation after the officer knelt on his back for several minutes, not the use of the spit hood.

A little bit more police training on handling mental health crises without suffocating someone could have resulted in a much different outcome.

Just sayin’…

yeah, because putting a hood over the head of someone in severe emotional/mental distress will certainly calm them down.
this was murder.

The coroner ruled it a homicide, yet it wouldn’t appear there is any urgency to call to account the perps.

All part of the GOP “Incite to Reelect” campaign.

It’s more than mental health though, it’s the mindset of the officers responding. Black men in America can’t call for help when in crises.

Well yes, but it depends on who committs the homicide.

People, if your loved one or family member is having mental health issues, do not call the police. Demand an alternative. Cops are not trained and haven’t the mental facilities to deal with anything that takes patience, tact and understanding. Force is what they resort to if they don’t shoot the person first.

Video after video comes with both that implication as well as weapon usage. If you sit back, take the racism component out of the mix, there is always that moment of extreme “Why didn’t they?”. Blake’s death holds a high degree of that. The officer seemed to almost offhandedly shoot him. In other cases, the action of firing a weapon seemed instantaneous and not considered at all. It is the first go to when presented with confrontation. George dying of someone kneeling on his neck and not paying attention to the actual life under that knee. This moment in time of bad decisions made is being seen over and over again. Before banging the police on racism, their training or seeming indoctrination needs to be questioned as seriously as the racism motivation. The reason I say it that way is a standard of training and care is the base to judge that performance before any other consideration. It is what everyone should expect across the board. Now moving the racism factor into place, if that standard is being met elsewhere but not in situations involving POC, then it magnifies the reality that it is being applied differently and by choice.

The horror of being handcuffed and having a hood put over my head would be more than I could bear.

Ugh. I feel like we are careening towards a massive tipping point - like we are only at the starting point of something epicly horrendous.

One officer wrote that they put the white spit hood on Prude because he was spitting continuously in the direction of officers and they were concerned about coronavirus.

Photos show police officers were not wearing face masks!

That’s irresponsible of them and had they’ve been wearing face mask, they would not need to be ‘concerned about coronavirus‘ that they have to put a spit hood on someone that turned into a homicide caused by “complications of asphyxia in the setting of physical restraint.” !

Police training and accountability has to change so that there will be no two justice system/policing in this country!

My son graduated a police academy about 20 yrs ago. He’s part of the justice system, but not a cop. He has said more than once that training for these situations is trivial with little time spent on them.
Enough of these situations have occurred over the years such that police academies should have no trouble in creating realistic training scenarios.
I suspect they just don’t give a shit.

The cops don’t seem to learn. Why would they? They don’t give a shit. Trump has their back.

This morning’s headline in the local paper:

We need a new branch of the police. Trained counselors, unarmed, backed up AT A DISTANCE by regular police, that can engage during a mental crisis, de-escalate the situation, and get the subject the help they need. Cheaper than riots, law suits and caskets, I would think.

Except they can’t be any branch of the police. For the community to give them any chance of success, they would need to be under another authority.

Can’t read your link due to paywall. Is this the story?

A Tennessee man who died hours after he was detained by police in Mississippi had been hogtied face-down on a stretcher, according to a witness.

Multiple news outlets report that 30-year-old Memphis chemical engineer Troy Goode died in a hospital Saturday night, two hours after being detained by the Southaven Police Department.
