As the child of a dairy farmer, I am well aware of the sacrifices made for food production. I am also aware that most farmers in our area were bigoted against minorities. Luckily my folks were FDR Democrats, so I was not indoctrinated like my friends. Nonetheless, this runs deep in the rural area I knew, even to this day some 65+ yrs later.

I think that Dems should try what you propose,* and try damned hard, but should avoid dying on that hill. Too many farms will go under if they are not “bailed out” soon.
*Less the part about supporting a bailout only if the tariffs are rescinded (that’s what prompted my response):

I think that extends to voter frustration too. We’ve gone from no AI to massive data centers all over the place – needed for some reason – taking massive resources without any discussion of priorities.

China quietly cut their oil consumption by 50% since the start of the war. We dont know for sure how or why they did this, but its its kept the world ecconomy off the worst case projections.
Astute readers will note this means China can unilaterally cripple the world economy, at any moment, if they feel the need.

Trump has grown tired of the Iran war. The administration is trying to backburner it for now, Axios reports, characterizing conversations Rubio has had with other foreign governments, and wants it deprioritized for now. “This is expected to be the policy at least until after the midterm elections, when a new military campaign could again be on the table,” Axios reporter Barak Ravid writes.
War as a social media construct. Donald Trump " I don’t want to be at war until after thd midterms so we aren’t at war." Everyone in the Republican party and Pentagon just nods. The press dutifully reports a line at the bottom of the third page. Everybody is happy.
We are only now discovering the damage we sustained to our middle eastern bases because the press just didn’t feel a need to report them until sailors on the Abraham Lincoln started jumping off the ship in dispair because the supplies and shore leave they counted on were gone.
The world has gone nuts. The Iranians have a vote. Americans are entitled to know how we are doing. I don’t give a damn about what the billionaire owners of the media think.

I don’t know how many farmers forget that. I remember news stories about farmers being upset about the SNAP reductions in the Big Ugly Bill.
I’d also like to put in a plug for the many farmers in my neck of the woods who are Dems, and progressive Dems, at that. They don’t get the attention that farmers elsewhere in the country get – understandably, since they are nowhere near as numerous and are not vital to the national economy or food supply. Still, let’s not forget about them. And there are also Dem farmers even in places like the Midwest. I remember a news story several years ago, probably on MS NBC, about a Wisconsin dairy farmer who has organized Dem farmers and a campaign to educate their Repub farmer-neighbors about the reality of Repub and Dem policies when it comes to farming.

Right, and so that he can avoid the appearance of defeat his mismanagement engendered, Donnie will have us all keep paying for the deployment and armament (other people’s money, of course) until he decides it’s safe for him to publicly change course.

Civilization won’t collapse just yet. Some oil is getting out of the Persian Gulf, a little by “shadow tankers” through the Strait and the Saudi pipelines to the Red Sea. Most of the oil and gas through the Strait goes to China and SE Asia. China isn’t hurt by the reduction because they have other supplies, so it’s mainly SE Asia that’s harmed.
The US, Europe, and the rest of the world isn’t as reliant on Gulf oil and gas, so it’s not a question of running out as much as the price being driven up everywhere.
What could happen if this goes on long enough is a world recession, but the markets have been adapting so far.

I don’t know what news sources you rely on, but this hasn’t been true for those I rely on. And yes, the press was slow to learn about the extent of the damage to our bases in the Middle East, but I have no reason to think it was for lack of trying to learn more. The Pentagon hasn’t kept secrets from the press and public and lied so much since Vietnam.

And per AI, French farmers receive between 7 and 9 billion euros annually from the European Union and the French government. Farmers from other nations in the EU are also heavily subsidized. In the EU nations as in the U.S., small farmers complain that too much of that money goes to large-scale, “corporate” farming operations. Another huge issue for U.S. farm policy.
