I guess we could send over a special military unit to see to the security of these individuals.
This special unit would be limited to a ten year term

Yes, this is critical: get them out now, vett later.

Not surprised there were only three Republican signers – refugee demonization is already in full swing on the Right – but am genuinely surprised one of those signers was Inhofe; always thought of him as the Louis Gohmert of Richard Shelbys.

Great idea, now how about the rest of NATO stepping up and helping to evacuate / resettle Afghans who are at peril? The US should do everything it can, but they shouldn’t be doing it alone. I know there have been a few countries offering to help, but there should be a lot more…

The Biden administration may already be working on this, but it’s going to be damned hard to figure out where to draw the line on who qualifies after the first or second tier. We can’t evacuate everyone. Also, both the Taliban and Biden want American boots off the ground by September 11th, so time is short for US military flights to get them out.

I suppose it’s possible that the Taliban might let women refugees leave on any civilian flights that can resume after that, but it’s an unknown factor and I sure wouldn’t bet on it. There are other ways out of the country, but the Taliban control all the border crossings.

They won’t let the younger ones leave. They need to continually replenish their terrorist ranks.

After the Syrian refugee crisis fed the rise of the alt-right in Europe, don’t hold your breath.

There’s a good chance Macron will be replaced next year by someone to the right of Marie Le Pen.

Yes. The one thing we don’t need to really worry about is “vetting” refugees from Afghanistan. Why? We lost. There is no reason for the Taliban to try to sneak “sleeper agents” into America when, effectively, America is their ally.

Shouldn’t NATO be stepping up on this? This seems to be that kind of situation. If these women have children and families I don’t see them leaving them behind.

Better to just create a safe zone at home for them. Y’know, just flood the airport with troops, then break out and take back Kabul…

Humanitarian issues for all Afghans at peril aside, I am far more concerned about domestic terrorism from the RWNJ USA than Islamic terrorism from half the globe away.

Yes, only 3 GOPers. I suspect they speak for others, though.

The letter is a good sign that Trump and his lackeys don’t have as much pull in the Senate as they’d like. I’d read somewhere a while back that all during the debates about the infrastructure bill, as Trump was lobbing grenades at everyone about it, Republicans just ignored all that–he’d had little to no effect on their thinking. This letter seems like further confirmation of that.

Given the current situation that would likely end up being just an extension of the kind of unworkable entanglement we have been in for the last 20 years. No, that is not a good idea.,

On the other hand, launching some discrete strike teams (Seals?, Rangers?) to locate as many of these women as possible and evacuate them might be a possibility.

I sympathize with the people who are in fear but what I don’t understand is why they weren’t leaving after TFG made the deal last year. Did they really think the US wouldn’t leave? I think humanity demands as much be done as possible but unfortunately will never be enough.

Wouldn’t have been an unreasonable bet to make. The military has been extremely resilient at not getting out of playgrounds that it wants to be in. See Syria, for example, perfect thing of them taking trump’s direct order to leave and getting him to do a 180 after promising him oil.

One winter in Winnipeg and they’ll be begging to be repatriated and happily undergo the required torture on arrival.

You misunderstand my thought. The ten year term was meant as example of mission creep that the US always applies to every situation we face.

We got here by using the Taliban to hunt down Bin Laden and basically let him go free.

The rest is history. We are either done there or not.
