Bipartisan Group Of Senators Request Info On Capitol Riot From Agencies Day Before Trial | Talking Points Memo

A bipartisan group of senators on Monday requested information from 22 agencies and departments related to the preparations for and response to the deadly insurrection of the Capitol last month. The senators issued their request a day before former President Trump’s second Senate impeachment trial is scheduled to begin.

Odds that this letter gets written if Dems aren’t chairing the committees:

Zero.

I’m guessing that these are members of that all important Procrastinators Caucus. Was there some kind of timer that went off ? Why in the world wait until the eve of an impeachment trial to make such a basic request ?

I’m just happy that there’s some accountability for Trump as opposed to the first two years when nothing was slowing him down.

Make that the “T**** Capitol Riots” so history is correct.

It’s going to take a while to present all that information. It won’t make POS look good. Nor will it make the Senators who vote to acquit him look good either. It really needs to be organized and presented properly.

I have a sneaky suspicion that rather a lot of it has been sitting in organized piles waiting upon Democrats to head the requesting Senate committees. It’s just a hunch…

The crux of this matter, with regard to impeachment, is why it took so long to get reinforcements for the besieged Capitol police. Were forces standing down because of directives from trump or his political appointees?

I know about trump’s seditious incitement of the insurrectionists. I don’t know what steps he took to aid and abet their attack on the Capitol by purposely delaying military and federal law enforcement from responding.

The public testimony about this will be compelling.

Give it time. :smiling_imp:

Calling the Capitol riots as an event that “will forever be a stain” in the country’s history…

Sounds like another stain I know of. It’s an orange-colored stain.

Wasn’t Trump the biggest security failure? Isn’t that why he was impeached? What are these security agencies planning to do about the next Trump security threat?

It’s about time they did that.

“The American people deserve a complete accounting of those failures.”

…or, as complete an accounting as can be slapped together in 24 hours.

JFC, this whole thing seems so slapdash. That’s not how I would prepare for something so vitally important to the safety of the republic. I plan my winter grocery runs further in advance.

Should the jury be looking at evidence before the start of trial?

Because it’s only been 5 days since the Senate passed an organizing resolution giving Dems committee chairs. Then don’t forget that with the run off election in GA the Dems didn’t have the upper hand until Jan 5th, and Harris as VP wasn’t sworn into office until Jan 20th.
Except for GA all states certified their elections on time, the GA senate run off race was the factor in tipping power in the Senate, and McConnell fucking dragged his feet through the process.

Here’s hoping they see evidence that t***PP impeded the deployment of the DC Nat’l Guard during the event.

Calling the Capitol riots as an event that “will forever be a stain” in the country’s history, the senators praised the “heroic acts of many officers and congressional staff.”

But they also noted the security failures that endangered lawmakers and law enforcement ultimately stood in the way of a peaceful transfer of power.

“Nevertheless, the security failures that led to the breach endangered not just the Vice President and the Congress, but the peaceful, democratic transfer of power itself,” the senators wrote. “The American people deserve a complete accounting of those failures.”

Forgive me for being a bit dense, but a bipartisan group of Senators believe the events of January 6, will be forever be a stain on our nation’s history, that a peaceful transfer of power was thwarted, that the lives of the sitting VP and Congress were threatened, and that the American people deserve a full accounting of what transpired, but they (meaning Republicans) insist on giving a pass to the chief instigator responsible for this? A man who to this is unapologetic about his actions. Utterly ridiculous.
