Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) formally objected to the Jan. 6 Select Committee’s subpoena asking him to testify before the panel in a letter sent to chair Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) last week.
“This is not a captious carping on technicalities. The Committee’s composition bears directly on the constitutional legitimacy…"
Why no – it’s not “captious carping,” about “committee composition,” it’s craptious larping for preening conservative alliteration junkies in service of insurrectional erections. But other than that, spot-on.
The refusal of Biggs et al to cooperate with a legally constituted congressional committee is predictable but also lays out a strategic path for Democrats if Republicans win a majority and begin their threatened reprisals: resist, denigrate, refuse.
No, it’s not a good sign for our Democracy or the rule of law but it won’t be the first time our nation has been through such a time; aye, and come out the other side too.
ETA: Andrew Jackson was not an exemplary POTUS but his putative response to a SCOTUS decision written by Chief Justice Marshall conveys the necessary attitude IMO: John Marshall has made his decision; now let him enforce it!
I live in his district, receive his weekly self promotional email consisting of reports about letters he’s written, photos with Border Patrol personnel, appearances on OAN, etc. This response to J6 was predictable. One hopes the Committee will air irrefutable evidence of his perfidy. But that’s just me.
I say fine. Anyone who believes the House Jan 6 Committee is improperly constituted should be afforded the option to go before a Federal grand jury instead. Pick one.
The immunity members of Congress get for undertaking their duties (speaking in Congress, votes for legislation, etc) does not extend to efforts to undo the results of an election. It’s interesting watching them try to muddy the waters, and attempt to undercut whatever is coming…it shows a lot of fear on the part of these Republicans, because they don’t know what the evidence is supporting the subpoenas. They are really worried about speaking, possibly because their real feelings will be let out (like McCarthy excoriating Trump) and open them up to attacks from the right wing crazies and Trump, or because they really were planning to help Trump overthrow the government and may have broken the law (like Perry apparently did). It’s a panic reaction, dressed up in legal language.
I really am waiting to see what happens with the hearings…I hope that these guys all get hung out to dry if they supported the insurrection or helped to plan it. And, I really hope the story has the impact it should, people tried to undo a free and fair election, at the very least the American people should be upset and remove them from office. I guess we’ll soon see if tribal loyalty is more important than following the laws of the land…though I think I already know the answer to that one.
So this is news how? He doesn’t wanna talk. The evidence against him will speak for him. He will have had his chance to explain and he failed to take it.
These subpoenas for Biggs, Brooks, et al. are arriving just a couple of weeks before the J6C starts their public presentations. There isn’t much time to incorporate whatever Biggs might say into their hearings and reports.
Which suggests to me that the J6C already has all they need. The subpoenas were just a courtesy to say to the recipients, “Last chance to officially tell your side of the story.” I doubt the J6C was expecting these insurrectionists would actually appear, and I doubt they need more information.
They all knew it was a lie, but they supported it. They knew that, and yet they doubled down.
Now it’s time to pay the piper, and not one honest person is to be found.
Serves them right to suffer, may it be profound.
