Biden Victory Means Some Guantanamo Prisoners May Be Released | Talking Points Memo

WASHINGTON (AP) — The oldest prisoner at the Guantanamo Bay detention center went to his latest review board hearing with a degree of hope, something that has been scarce during his 16 years locked up without charges at the U.S. base in Cuba.

Releasing some of the prisoners will create space for members of the trump administration.

Bipartisan? Really? Perhaps my memory is off.

Obama’s early pledge to close it is now seen as a strategic mistake that undercut what had been a bipartisan issue.

But but what about all those Democrats and never Trumpers who were going to be rounded up and sent to Gitmo without due process? Does this mean that the Q believers were deceived? Could it be that Q was full of shit? Welcome to reality Q’ers although I am sure you all will come up with another fake reason that none of this actually happened.

Now we’ll have room for RWNJs, aka, domestic terrorists.

And I am only half-joking. I have been opposed to that prison from day 1. But the idea of sending trump and his minions there has merit:

trump is CiC of military; a court martial or military tribunal may be appropriate (IANAL)
For Miller & Co., chickens come home to roost
Fair trial by jury for most of them will not be possible
They are terrorists

Don’t you think the accommodations are a bit too nice for anything Trump? He and his people are proving to not be quite that upscale.

We may have to close the Golden Corral and pave over the shuffleboard court.

I remember republicans blocking him and the press kept attacking him for it.

GWB, Colin Powell, John McCain were all pro-closure.

Without any proclamation or fanfare, put them all on a plane, fly to Mogadishu, touch down just long enough to give each of them a change of clothes, a couple of bottles of water, and $100 in small bills, have the flight attendants say, “Buh-bye,” and fly home. Let the right-wing rage machine howl. At least they’d learn the meaning of a fait accompli.

ETA: I’m referring to the remaining detainees.

I think the government there is small enough to drown in the bathtub. Just what they have always wanted.

Only McCain was in office at the time. So one member of the opposition makes closure bipartisan? What I remember was an ungodly pie fight with several Democrats joining the Republicans (was Schumer one of them?) in having their hair off at moving the prisoners to US facilities.

ETA. It was more than several. Lot of NIMBY going on.

Senate Democrats made good on their promise Wednesday to deny President Barack Obama funding to close the Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, military prison. The chamber voted, 90-6, to strip funding in the $91.3 billion supplemental war spending bill to shutter the facility, with only a handful of Democrats voting against the move because they want to get the closure under way.Instead, Senate Democrats added language barring Obama from using funds in the supplemental “or any other Act may be obligated or expended— for the transfer or incarceration of any detainee in the U.S. It would also prohibit Obama from constructing or renovating any existing U.S. prison in order to house Guantánamo detainees.Democratic leaders acknowledged Tuesday that they decided to reverse themselves on providing $80 million to close the facility because Obama has not yet presented a plan on where to transfer or house the hundreds of suspected terrorists held there. The list of detainees includes the alleged mastermind of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. Obama is expected to lay out such a plan Thursday. The Senate’s move was seen as a repudiation of Obama’s plan, considering the bill would now bar any detainee from ever coming to the U.S., even to stand trial for terrorism-related crimes.
