Biden Signs Bill Giving Capitol Police Unilateral Authority To Request National Guard Assistance

President Biden on Wednesday signed into law a bill that would give the chief of the Capitol Police unilateral authority to request support from the National Guard. The bill easily passed both the House and Senate.

Given what we know now about the CP, does anyone think there’s a prayer in hell that the CP would do the right thing if under another attack? Given the news about the number of folks that have left under the pressure of other members who don’t necessarily feel that rioters are anything other than tourists, do we sincerely believe that someone in authority would actually call the NG out?

With all the Rthugs in the CP there will probably still be a lo-o-o-oo-ng delay.

Seems pretty plain by now that the Guard was initially supposed to be deployed against counter-demonstrators who never appeared, as a pretext for Trump declaring some sort of national emergency or the Insurrection Act or whatever. They seem to have gotten cold feet when it was just the MAGA mob assailing the Capitol.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have expressed their belief that the previous protocol for requesting support from federal law enforcement is what led to a delayed response when a mob of former President Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6.

However, a number of Republicans claim that the change is necessary only to relieve wait times when lines of peaceful tourists wanting to enter the Capitol grow too long.

“President Biden on Wednesday signed into law a bill that would give the chief of the Capitol Police unilateral authority to request support from the National Guard.”

Does it give them authority to arrest Republican members they catch helping the attackers, or on the phone with conspirators at the Willard hotel, or revealing the location of Democratic members sheltering in place?

(Asking for a friend who’s never committed treason.)

I’m sure the Deplorables also plan to commemorate Jan. 6 with the raising of festive flags and random firing of semi-automatics from coal-rollers. Should be a jolly day for all!

In the days before 1/6 there was a series of tweets and emails from a host of groups ranging from the woman’s march to Antifa urging them not to go to the Capitol “Don’t take the bait, stay home, it’s not wise” Thankfully they heeded the advice and let them wallow in their own stupidity.

Haven’t seen the upshot of this, but these officers weren’t suspended for a walk in the park.

Time to hit the Google. Curious to see the vote and now many voted against this bill.

EDIT: Unanimous consent.

Neither of which support the proposition that Capitol cops are quitting their jobs because their colleagues are pro-insurrection.

Different agencies and different individuals within the agencies had different motivations and different plans. And none was prepared for what ultimately occurred.

Bingo. Pence making it clear the day before that he wasn’t going to play along by rejecting ballots left Trump flailing, and the only tool he really had left was unleashing the mob against the Capitol in hopes that it might accomplish something. The Pentagon was clearly concerned that Trump might order them to do some of the dumb shit MAGA people were chattering about, but it’s highly unlikely anybody was ever instructed to side with the insurrectionists because that would have given away the game.

Is this better?

As Tx reminded us a few days ago - Fanone is with the Metro police, not the Capitol police.

  1. Fanone is MPD, not Capitol.

  2. He’s one guy.

I don’t recall reminding anyone that Fanone is MPD before a few minutes ago, but it’s correct. I still doubt many more will be joining him on the way out due to the claim that the force is too Trumpy. Of course they’re Trumpy. They’re cops, and cops are almost always authoritarian pricks at heart.

Is there a list somewhere of those who voted against this bill? Like in the House?
Asking for the sake of completeness.

I too wondered…
