Saule Omarova left her confirmation hearing feeling calm.
She didn’t think she’d been “savaged,” as some writers would later put it. She’d held her own on what had become a rhetorical battlefield, remaining calm under fire from hostile senators peering down at her.
That hearing was one of the most disgraceful, cringe-inducing things I have ever seen. What dreadful disrespect of an accomplished professional, what cynicism and character assassination from those loathsome senators. and people HAPPILY endorse them, elect them to high office time and time again. I can’t adequately express my outrage and humiliation as an American citizen, having to co-exist with creatures like Senator Kennedy…
i was listening to that hearing in the car and nearly drove off the road when I heard Kennedy–all ah shucks and folksy, no trace of that Harvard education in his voice–wonder whether to call her Professor or “comrade.” As I said, loathsome.
Today…Russia is no longer a communist country. A shitty one for sure…but it’s now an autocracy and capital is allowed so long at the governing boyz get their cut. The reason folks LEFT the USSR when the getting was good ( during its collapse ) was to get away from communism, cruelty and dehumanization. If Saule Omarova was fond of communism she’d be in China or Vietnam. There is ZERO chance anyone can install communism in the USA now or back in 1952. You don’t come here for communism anymore than you go to an Italian restaurant for a burrito.
This woman escaped what she was accused of being. There was no principled objection to her so out came the bigotry.
This was just a vulgar objection to a person that wanted to do the right thing by people that collect campaign funds from a rapacious financial sector. As long as the F.I.R.E. economy owns America no one sees an improvement in their lives over that of the previous generation.
Senator John Neely Kennedy interdepartmental major at Vanderbilt was poli-sci, philosophy, and economics. I guess he’s forgotten that part and relied on political science part and his Republican dogma to Joe McCarthy with a Southern drawl. @murgatroid I agree that Kennedy’s questioning was a disgrace.
The fear of the financial sector to have someone who is independent regulate them makes it clear they need some heavy regulation to cut out all of the bad dealing they are doing to Americans. Elizabeth Warren got the same treatment because of the fears of having a strong woman looking out for the people. Hopefully Biden can find another candidate to put into the position, and give them space to investigate the banking industry and make sure it is following the law.
It’s really infuriating that Omarova was put through this, and inexcusable…that’s the kind of person you want in government, not the corrupt yokels that ran things during the Trump administration.
When i was listening to that outrage, especially after omarova asked Kennedy whether she could help having been born in the Soviet Union, I thought of another Kennedy–John F–facing those ministers in Houston and pointing out that no one had asked him when he enlisted in the Navy what religion he happened to have been born into…
