Former Vice President Joe Biden said that he predicts Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) may become “mildly cooperative” in a post-Trump era.
Biden is the leading Democratic candidate, and McConnell is currently aiding the Republican president in suppressing the Constitutional function of the Senate. Even if his speculation is right about McConnell being “mildly cooperative,” it is an unforced error not to bring the focus back to the fact that the Senate leader is acting as the president’s bagman.
Dream on, Biden. I’m sure McConnell is looking forward to all that wonderful comity.
Or maybe you could just step back into that time capsule from the 1980’s and give another Democrat a shot at the gold ring. Someone whose eyes are open about the current reality.
Forget about working with McConnell, focus on beating him in 2020 instead: Amy McGrath will get more trampled than a patch of grass during an elephant stampede if she’s the Dem candidate. She’s run one of the worst gaffe filled campaigns in memory that will destroy any enthusiasm for her and she needs to be knocked out of the primary.
The only person that I think has a shot of beating Mitch now is the new candidate Charles Booker who is a new State Rep. He’s black, his parents were ministers, grew up in poverty, and he has diabetes which a lot of voters there can relate to. He’s pretty outspoken on liberal issues which might be a problem in KY, but he’s not trying to backpedal on previous statements which makes him a lot better than McGrath.
I’m willing to admit the possibility that people want to hear this. Stupid, inattentive people, but, you know, people with votes. Like whatever. But I’m here to tell you, Joe, it makes me sick to hear it, and I’m not some “woke” 23-year-old. I’m the biggest pragmatist you ever saw and I think this is bullshit.
It’s delirious statements like this that, even with his qualifications, reminds me how much Biden disinterests me. I think of him as the Milquetoast of Magnesia candidate.
Mitch McConnell stole the United States Supreme Court because he could. Mitch McConnell is not giving Joe Biden one goddamned thing. Joe Biden is smoking Hunter’s crackpipe if he thinks anything different.
Remember Joe, when you said a SCOTUS nominee shouldn’t be considered in the final year of a lame duck president if the vacancy was created by a resignation to make way for a younger candidate of similar views.
Remember Joe, when McConnell quoted you purposefully leaving the word resignation out and how it was the standard talking point of FOXNews that you agreed Merrick Garland shouldn’t be considered?
Well Scalia didn’t resign, he effin’ died and McConnell misquoted you and did nothing about Garland.
Is that your idea of mildly cooperative?
Folks, this isn’t aimed at us, this is aimed at the middle of the road voters that sees Democrats and Republicans as two sides of the same coin, always fighting, and just wants it all to stop and government to work together to improve things. This is aimed at the campaign, with the assumption that Biden will win the primary. His campaign is hoping to pull those people, some of whom voted for Trump hoping that he would kick things around and make big changes but realize Trump is really not different except for his open assholeness. I doubt Biden really thinks Moscow Mitch will work with him, he’s hoping to get voters to put pressure on Republicans to get them to work with Democrats.
It’s wrongheaded, of course, Republicans will continue their total war until they pay enough of a political price to knock it off. The question is if Biden will be a president who will try too hard to work with Republicans, or if he’ll be realistic, offer to cooperate and then ignore them when they act out. It’s hard to say now, I don’t think we’ll know until he’s president.
The best option is to elect a Democratic president and Senate, and then tell the Republicans to go to hell, which is the minimum they deserve. It’s not clear that the Democrats can win that way…they are always required to work with Republicans, no matter how much Republicans refuse to collaborate.
So – open to a Republican VP, thinks Traitor Mitch McConnell will be cooperative. Why would Dems vote for Joe in the primary if this is his approach? Don’t get it.
